Rasheena Woodard CTE 3050 November 25, 2013 Reflection and Application Paper Previously in my CTE class, we learned

the 10 different career and employability skills used in the real world. Each skill play an important role in the business world and each skill contain specific strategies that will expound on the skill itself. Here is a better explanation of each skill and how each one is applied to the real world.

Academic skills applied to work-related situations include communication, math and science skills. If I were to teach this specific skill in a classroom, I would focus mainly on the communication part because of the fact that you cant make it through without it. There is a variety of communication skills like: Intra-personal communication skills, Interpersonal
communication skills, Non verbal communication skills and Mass communication skills. I would

explain each type very briefly so that they get a sense of how communication is important. For the math part, I would teach the business part which is a 7 step process. The process is: introduce the lesson, assess students math awareness as it relates to the lesson, work through the math example embedded in the lesson, work through related, contextual math examples, and work through traditional math examples, have students demonstrate their understanding and give a formal assessment. I would teach the science part as it relates to the medical field. Career planning plays an important role in everybodys lives. It involves career awareness, self-assessment and exploration. When I introduce career planning, I would ask the

students what they would like to be when they got older. After they tell me, I would then have them research the career so they would be aware of what kind of skills is needed in that particular field. Next I would have them take a career quiz to help them really figure out they want to do, because their plan could change. The quiz would also give them a sense of what type of person they are. Finally I would have them either complete an observation or job shadow to see what type of work is done in the field. Before they do the work, I would give them a brief description about the importance of career planning as well as other information I think they need to know.

For developing and presenting information, each student would learn how to gather, organize and interpret information by using graphs, charts or any other technique involved. They would be able to understand the advantages and disadvantages of presenting information. I would show them some examples of good and bad presentation skills. I might also have them do something where they actually have to present something to the class.

During the problem solving lesson, I would teach them the 6 step process that go along with it. I would then have them try to solve some type of problem I created just to see how they went about solving it. I would also explain to them that every situation has different ways to be solved. Then I would have them create their own problem where the rest of the class would have to try and solve. Next they would be given a worksheet with different problems to solve. Instead of completing the worksheet alone, I would split them up into small groups which will lead to the next lesson.

Since the previous lesson had the class work in small groups, I would introduce the lesson of teamwork. Teamwork involves group participation, conflict resolution and diversity.

Teamwork is very important in each field, because you are only withholding one position that requires the help of another. Each student will understand the importance of teamwork and why they will need to work with others throughout their life. I would then break down each component and the effectiveness of them. Then we would do a teamwork activity called The Human Knot, followed by more activities. Then I would ask them to come up with a definition of teamwork to post in the classroom.

The next segment would be about personal management. Personal management has 4 main components which are: responsibility, self-management, ethical behavior and self respect as well as respect for others. I would create a power point for each component and how they connect with one another. I would then have them complete some activities that relate to personal management that would let me know if they understand it or not.

The next segment is organizational skills which include time, money, materials and human resources. I would then teach them the meaning as well as importance of each item. Then the class would complete an activity for each part. Then I would have a couple examples on positive and negative organizational skills.

Next would be the lesson on negotiation skills. For this lesson I would present the negotiation model to the class so they know how it works. There would be a debate activity project that would have them negotiate a deal for something like selling a product. Then there would be a class discussion on the negative as well as positive effects of negotiation.

The next lesson would be about using employability skills which include interview skills, resume writing, cover letters, and applications. I would create a power point on each section and

have the class list some good and bad things about each one. Next each student will participate in an interview session amongst themselves. I will assign each student with a role and give them 5 minutes to plan a skit and act it out. Then I would have them to start creating a resume so they know what jobs expect to see on them.

The final lesson would be on understanding systems that include hierarchy models, responsibility and environment. There would be a power point about the different types of systems used and how efficient each one is. Next I would have each student complete a worksheet in which a scenario would be written and they would have to choose the best system that could possibly be used for the scenario. After that we will go over the worksheet as a group to see what answers was chosen and why.

After each lesson, there would be a test given to show me what they understand and what they dont understand. It would give me an idea on how to improve the lesson to make sure each student gains as much knowledge as they can on the material. I would ask them to write down something they already knew about the material, something that was new and how they could apply it their everyday lives.
