Lesson Four: Sink or Float

Lesson Objective Students will be able to identify the concept of sinking and floating by testing three objects in water. Assessments Pre-Assessment- The students will record their prediction on a chart. During-AssessmentClass as a whole will test to see which objects will sink or float (apple, squash, and pumpkin). Post-AssessmentStudents will record the results on a chart and complete a sentence stating what they used to think as to what they know now by conducting the experiment. Format of Formative Assessments Pre-AssessmentChart- At the beginning of the lesson, the children will record their guess about what will occur during the experiment on a chart that I made. During-AssessmentThe experiment will be conducted with the whole class. Children will be asked questions about their predictions and if they were correct or not. Post-AssessmentThe students worksheet will be collected and I will check their response to the fill in the blank sentence that is provided. Accommodations For the students that may not be able to explain their knowledge of what theyve learned in a written format will be allowed to verbally explain it to me themselves.

The assessments for this lesson will allow me to see where each student stands with prior knowledge and where they are once the lesson is completed. The pre assessment for this lesson will be in the form of a chart. The students will have their own to fill out. The post assessment will be evaluated by the completion of a sentence. The pre assessment requires the students to check in their chart, which objects will float and which will sink. When looking over their charts, it will allow me to see what they thought about each item. The during assessment for this lesson will include me asking the children about their predictions and what they were. This allows me to understand why they thought their prediction was so. The post assessment will require the students filling out a statement on a worksheet. This will enable me to understand if the students grasp the concept or not. The

assessment results allowed me to give the students a brief introduction to the idea of buoyancy, which will be taught in depth in future grades.
