Art and Design

About the course


The A Level Art course is ideal for those with a creative career in mind and who want to study related degrees at university. You will develop your skills and strengths in painting, drawing, print, textiles, ICT and sculpture. You will have the chance to discover and experiment with a wide range of media, explore art history and contemporary artists. You will also be able to make use of a well-equipped Sixth Form art studio which is specically dedicated to A Level Art students. You will be able to study in an environment conducive to study both during and outside your timetabled lessons.

How will I be assessed?


Assessment at AS Level Unit 1 is internally assessed through a coursework portfolio which is then externally moderated. Unit 2 is assessed by external examination, in the summer term, which is internally marked and externally moderated. Each unit is worth 25% of the marks. Assessment at A Level Unit 3 is an internally assessed and externally moderated, Unit 4 is an examination which will be internally marked and externally moderated. Each unit is worth 25% of the marks.

Course breakdown
AS: Unit 1 - Coursework Portfolio Unit 2 - 5 Hours Terminal Exam A2: Unit 3 - Personalised Investigation (Including 1000 - 3000 words essay) Unit 4 - 15 hours Terminal Exam

Additional minimum entry requirements:


C in GCSE Art or Merit in BTEC Art.

Is this course for me?


A passion for and interest in art is essential for success in this subject. Those students with a strong independent work ethos and dedication are the most suitable for this demanding but enjoyable course.

Where can it take me?


Students who have been successful in their A Level Art studies have gone on to complete courses at a Foundation Art College and then proceeded to study Art at degree level or have gone straight to appropriate degree courses. This course will be benecial to anyone who is wishing to study or pursue careers in the Art, Design or craft elds, including Fine Art, Architecture, Interior and Stage Design. Previous students have found that the course complements other courses such as Graphics, Textiles and Drama. 12
