Pregnancy
Overview:
Students will master the information of reproduction and pregnancy through participating in a number of individualized learning activities which explore the male and female reproductive systems and the three trimesters of pregnancy.

[Grade(s): 11-12l] [3 50-minute Lessons]

Teaching Materials
Male and female reproductive charts (1 per student) Summary information on birth defects Birth defect student chart Saltine crackers 25 paint swatches (5 each of blue, yellow, pink, green and orange)

Standards/Objectives:
Standard 9: Students will identify the various skills and responsibilities of parenting. Objective 2: Explain the human reproductive process, infertility, and steps that lead to a healthy pregnancy Cognitive Domain, Level 3: Application

Student friendly learning goal: I can apply my knowledge of reproduction. This means I can use my knowledge to complete a variety of activities about the reproductive system and the trimesters of pregnancy.

Introduction/Set Induction (2 minutes):

Transition (3 minutes):
Students will pick out a color swatch of pastel blue, yellow, pink, green, and orange. This will decide the groups they will divide into.

Lesson Body (135 minutes):


Mastery Learning: PHASE 1: Identify objectives/goals of learning: The teacher will explain to the students, how they will divide into 5 groups. These group swill rotate around 5 stations completing the tasks at each station before moving onto the next station. The stations will rotate every 20 minutes. Each group will be expected to complete 2 stations a day. PHASE 2: Divide content into small learning activities/assessments: The learning stations will be as follows 1. Labelling reproductive systems on male and female charts: Students will fill out charts of male and female reproductive systems. 2. Preventing birth defects: Students will read information on specific birth defects, fill out a chart about each one and create a pamphlet about birth defects to hang on a wall of the classroom. 3. 1st trimester of Pregnancy: Students will use the Changes in Baby information to fill out their As your baby grows chart for the 1st trimester. They will eat a Saltine cracker while they do this. 4. 2nd trimester of Pregnancy: Students will use the Changes in Baby information to fill out their As your baby grows chart for the 2nd trimester. 5. 3rd trimester of Pregnancy: Students will use the Changes in Baby information to fill out their As your baby grows chart for the 3rd trimester. They will do this while laying down on the floor with their feet up on a chair. PHASE 3: Identify materials and resources to be used by students: The teacher will explain each station and what tasks are required at each station. Students will utilizes provided research material PHASE 4: Diagnostic Tests (Formative assessments implemented): There are charts and graphs at each station for the students to complete. The students will also be asked to present their pamphlets to the class. PHASE 5: Supplementary Instruction: Students will then be asked to create a public service announcement (PSA). Their PSA needs to be about how to avoid a specific birth defect. They can choose groups or do it on their own. They will present their PSA to the class on the third day.

Transition (2 minutes):
Students will return to their seats.

Summary/Closure (3 minutes):
The teacher will discuss with the class how they felt about each of the stations and if there was anything they wanted to discuss for in detail about any of the activities or information presented in the stations.

Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will complete a male and female reproductive chart, a pamphlet about birth defects, an As your baby grows chart, and a PSA.
