Major and Career Planning

Deciding on your own fit career is one of the most relevant decisions youll every make in life, right next to picking the best suitable major to pursue it. Along with making this decision you have to think Well what am I interested in? What do I like to do? Will I commit to this? The field of work which you choose is important because it will determine where you will spend a good deal of your working life and will also define how many opportunities you will have to branch out using your basic skills set. Speaking of skill set, you have to be aware of what youre capable of doing to apply to that career, and the personality you have as a person. I know personality may not seem like something as important to refer to when making these decisions when in fact its critical. A great way to find out what type of personality you have is to take the MyersBriggs Personality Type Indicator self-assessment. This assessment tests you by asking you simple questions about dealing with people, the workplace, life situations, etc. And how you respond determines what kind of results youll get telling you what type of person you perceive to be. This particular test I would say is beneficial to college students if anyone because this is the most crucial time when deciding on a career. Believe it or not, after taking this test a lot of students realize somethings they hadnt and somethings they were familiar with about themselves. So this surely helps people become aware or re-assured of their internal outlooks of themselves. As well as the test does also list

careers that your kind of personality has the highest percentages in, to sort of show you what youre mostly to be seen doing as far as a career. To determine your type of personality, your results will be a four letter word. When I took the test, turns out I have an ENFP personality type. Whats ENFP mean? Each letter stands for something. E stands for extraversion, which means I have interest in the people and things around me. N stands for intuition, meaning to have interest in what can be imagined, seen with the minds eye. F stands for feeling; being interested and knowing whats important and valuable. P is for perception; having interest in acting by watching, trying out and adapting as well. After reading more in depth of what this specific personality type indicates, I will say I have to agree. Somethings that stood out was that it said ENFPs can be the warmest, kindest, and most sympathetic of mates; affectionate, demonstrative, and spontaneous. That ENFPs are both "idea"-people and "people"-people, who see everyone and everything as part of a cosmic whole. They want to both help and to be liked and admired by other people, on both an individual and a humanitarian level. ENFPs do get distracted, especially if another interesting issue comes along. They also tend towards procrastination, and dislike performing small, uninteresting tasks. And can sometimes be blindsided by their secondary Feeling function. These are most certainly somethings I found accurate about the type of person I am. The careers that most suited my MBTI personality varied but all seem to have something to do with some type of personal social interaction with the people. Three careers that were listed were dental hygienist, psychologist, and lawyer. Dental hygienists make about $68,250 per year. Their future outlook is a growing 38%, which is much

faster than average. The education needed is only an associates degree. A major that definitely could apply to this career is biology! Some skills youll need are service orientation, critical thinking and service orientation. As far as a psychologist goes, they make also around $68,640 per year. Their future outlook is 22% which is just faster than average. To be a psychologist you need your bachelors degree. One interesting thing I noticed is that there are a bunch of different types of psychologist that you could be such as a counseling psychologist, clinical psychologist, school psychologist and more! One major relating to this career would of course be psychology. Skills needed are to be able to support and help the people psychologically. Not last but least, a lawyers median salary is $112,760 per year. Their future job outlook is 10% which is said to be as about as fast as average. And the education needed to pursue this career is doctoral or professional degree. A major applied to this career could be to criminal justice studying criminology. Some obvious skills for this career is to be able to negotiate, persuade and problem solve. All these jobs like I persisted have much connection with the people and helping out. Researching this information from the MBTI test and Onet Online where I got the career information, did benefit me as far as gaining knowledge of myself, what careers Im most likely to work in in the future, what I need to be capable of as far as skills and education to pursue them.
