Colonial Tools for Building

Augers were the biggest tools used for drilling in wood. Gimlets were small augers used to drill pilot holes for nails and screws. Drawknives were used to shape and trim things like shingles. Bench planes shaved wood to the desired thickness and made it straight and smooth. Claw hammers were common, and were similar to hammers we have now. Handsaws were used for cutting of boards along and across the grain. Crosscut saws required to men, and were used to cut logs and boards. Carpenters Squares were made of iron and tested right angles.

Colonial Housing in the 1700s

In the 1700s, Colonial Americans resided, for the most part, within the original 13 Colonies. Not much is known about housing in the Rocky Mountains, aside from Native American history and ruins. The home shown on this page was built around 1730 in Halifax, Plymouth County, Virginia. It belonged to Shadrach Standish. The style of this home was common in the Colonies at this time.

Bevels were used to lay out angles other than 90 degrees.
