[Adult Roles and Responsibilities]

Financial Goals
Overview:
The students will be in the computer lab. This will enable them to do research and comparison shopping for housing, cars, etc. The students will learn to make realistic financial goals and prioritize the money they have. After leaving this class they will know how to research and find the best situation for their family.

Standards/Objectives: (Identify domain & level)


Standard 5: Students will identify and utilize basic consumer, money management, and financial strategies. a. Define basic consumer terms. b. Define budgeting terms and develop a realistic monthly family budget, based upon a set income, which includes savings, housing, utilities, transportation, insurance, clothing, entertainment, and miscellaneous categories. c. Identify marriage and family financial goals. Cognitive, level 4, Analysis Students will create family financial goals that will help them prioritize their money to fit realistic budget.

Introduction/Set Induction (5 minutes):


You have 1 minute to list all the things you have to pay for when you get married and start your own family. Who had the most things listed? What things didnt you have on your list that he/she had on his/her list?

Transition (3 minutes):
Class will divide into groups depending on the family name they were given at the beginning of the financial planning unit.

Lesson Body (75 minutes): (Financial Goals/Cooperative Learning)


Cooperative Learning: Phase One: (20 minutes) Group leader will come to the teacher and take a card that will be the situation they are in and what job they will have. See below. From there they will fill out a KND model in the individual groups. Questions to answer What do you know about budgeting already? What do you know about your money priorities? What do you need to know about your money spending habits? What goals will you make in your family for spending? Phase Two: (40 minutes) The students will be given a graphic organizer to comparison shop and find the best option for their family with the information they know. Goal- comparison shop for the best option. Give three options and circle the best one on the graphic organizer. New questions may arise for the students. Have them write questions down so the class can talk about them. Phase Three: See graphic organizer Phase Four: Assessment task is forming a budget that will work for their family. Phase Five: Reflect and adjust (15 minutes) Look at the KND model you filled out at the beginning of class. Were your questions from the Need to know section answered? Fill out a KWL model as a class up on the board. After this activity what do you know? What do you want to know or want to know how to do? What have you learned?

Transition (2 minutes):
Each student will turn in his/her worksheet they filled out in the groups.

Summary/Closure (5 minutes):
Exit pass using 3-2-1 model. List three things you learned, two things you want to learn more about, and 1 question you have.

Assessment/Evaluation:
The students will be assessed by their participation and by turning in a filled out worksheet.

You have the opportunity to do some comparison shopping and find what you want for your family. What kind of housing do you want? What can you afford? Is it possible to have both or do you need to compromise in other areas so you have enough for another area? These are all questions to be considered as you make your decision Throughout this process you may have many questions like Which company is the best? What do my parents do? How can I save more money on food? Write them down. And do some mo re research after this class is over. That is where you will learn the most.
