How can I create a word problem to represent a given equation or inequality? How do I solve a linear equation and inequality? How do I find the inverse of a linear equation or inequality? What makes a solution reasonable within the context of a problem? How can I use linear equations and inequalities to help solve problems in every day life? Activities (tied to 1) Start with journal writing/think-write-pair-share about how to solve a given real life problem (parents give allowance, how can you figure out how much of a certain item that you will be able to buy). Add inequality/linear equation to word wall. Direct instruction for how to solve linear equations and inequalities, then students will be given the choice to work on a short problem set in class with a small group, partner, or alone. (tied to 2) Untying the knot at the beginning of class, students will be given a short piece of string and asked to tie it in a knot. Next, they will exchange knots with another student and then untie that knot/ short journal write to explain what they did. Class discussion to explain how untying the knot is like using the inverse of a function add inverse of a function to word wall. Practice finding the inverse of given equations and inequalities.

(tied to 3) A word problem related to writing/using a linear equation or inequality will be posted in front of the class. Students will be asked to pair up and discuss how they would go about decoding the word problem to create an equation or inequality that represents the problem (without writing anything down, actually creating the equation). Then partners will separate and try writing the equation/inequality on their own. Ask a few students to share their thought process/what they came up with. Practice writing equations or inequalities given a list of a few word problems. (tied to 4) Students will be put in groups and each group will be given an equation or inequality. Student groups will be asked to create a word problem for which equation or inequality could be used to find a solution. Come together as a class to discuss the work of each group. (tied to 5) Students will be given a real-life situation and will work independently to find a solution to the problem. This particular problem will have a solution that does not make sense in the context of the problem (needing a negative amount of a liquid, having half of a person, etc). Students will then brainstorm other situations where a solution may exist on paper that does not make sense in the real world.
