CSUFs Office of Student Life

To: Dean Esiquio Uballe, Ed. D From: Amanda Addie, Daniel Beck, & Josh Choe Date: 12/12/201312/12/201310/11/2013 Subject: Recommendation for TIME magazine for the waiting room The purpose of this memo is to present TIME magazine to Dean Uballe asfor it is the best choice infor the CSUFs Office of Student Life.not quite your purpose. Summary follow white space conventions With roughly 37,000 students attending CSUF, it is safe to assume (not safe. Can you do some research?) that appointments will be set at the Office of Student Life. Students will utilize their tuition fees and use the services the college offers to maximize their academic experience. One can only expect meetings and appointments will be set with Dean Uballe, hence a waiting room is necessary to delegate and funnel students in an organized fashion. TheOur waiting room needs to offer simple hospitality and a magazine serves that necessity properly. Our research shows We have researched proficient amount of evidence and determined that TIME magazine is the best option compared to the Atlantic and National Geographic. TIME magazine has an intense ww amount of subjects thus making TIME one of the worlds popular magazines. Work on concision. What criteria are you comparing? Discussion National Geographic is a highly funded magazine with highly credible information but, this magazine solely focuses on scientific findings and research. This may not interest every person coming into the office and primarily only target readers in related environmental sciences (unclear: para). The National Geographic magazine has been around for over 125 years and was first established in 1888 (National Geographic Magazine, 2013). The magazine has gained its rapport (ww) with the national audience as to only reference geography and notorious for having occasional nudity (para). TIME reports on multiple subjects, produces diverse articles, and prints various pictures while the National Geographic only covers science related fields. National Geographic publishes a new magazine only once per month and this is not suitable for frequent visitors; the same magazine issue would be viewed multiple times thus losing its value of being

informative. Although this which?magazine is 15 dollars per year, it would not be a viable shortterm investment. One of the reasons this magazine is cheap is due to the fact that it is not published as often as TIME. A new issue of TIME is distributed by every Friday thus in the short and long term run there will be multiple magazines to read. This P needs a t.s. The Atlantic has as many subjects as TIME covers however, this magazine is only published ten times per year (The Atlantic Magazine, 2001). The limited amount of issues will be at the office for a longer period of time than National Geographic. Because of the scare amount of issues and limited publications, students and others visiting the office will view the articles in The Atlantic as being redundant. Even though it has a wide variety of subjects including business, politics, art and entertainment, it is a monthly issue while TIME covers these subjects on a weekly basis. The Atlantic is not able to cover current issues and news as quickly as TIME. The annual subscription is 25 dollars which is ten dollars more than National Geographic and TIME magazine offers 43 more magazines for only five dollars more. T.s. TIME magazine has a wide variety of subjects in addition to a high publication rate. It has high volumes of pictures, multiple subjects with adequate content, and numerous popular informative trends; the subjects covered are arts, business, entertainment, health, politics, science, sports, and technology. TIME magazine has one of the highest publication rates with 53 issues per year while The Atlantic and National Geographic publish less than a fourth of that amount. A new issue is released every single Friday plus an additional special edition issue is given to subscribers. Although TIME magazine is the most expensive of the three magazines when initially paying, TIME is actually the cheapest for the long-term investment. The price for National Geographic costs $1.25 per issue, The Atlantic costs $2.50 per issue, but TIME magazine costs only $0.57 per issue. TIME is one of the most popular magazines in the world, with well over five million subscribers (Time Magazine, faq). The magazine publishes eight international editions reaching over 150 countries. The first issue date back to 1923 and is still known to be current and informative (Time Magazine, archive). Each issue of TIME is filled with content on many different subjects that are educational, intellectual, and original.examples Most of all, the articles and pictures in TIME are thought provoking which is appropriate for the waiting room for Student Life. These questions that arise from viewing possibly racy topics will only bring innovation and cultural awareness for students. Recommendation TIME is the best magazine subscription for the office. With 53 issues a year this ensures new magazines to read every week. The magazine will engage anyone for it has a wide variety of subjects that interests every reader. Many of the articles inside are short and concise for a quick read. When considering costs and the long-term investment, TIME magazine costs the least in comparison with the other two magazines. We believe TIME offers the most sufficient adequacies for the waiting room environment and will only benefit the visitors.

Memo Peer Review Sheet Criteria Addresses audience with an appropriate, clear, and succinct style. Attends to audiences needs and values. Uses conventional design of memos, including heading, statement of purpose, summary, discussion, and recommendation sections. Defines relevant criteria and provides specific details to support its endorsement or rejection of each magazine. Organizes results and paragraphs in a smooth, logical pattern. Comments Your meaning is sometimes unclear because of word choice or sentence structure. Who is your audience? Can you do some research and provide evidence here? Following conventional memo design makes your memo easier to follow: good.

Your comparison of costs is well supported: good! Youve neglected to specify your criteria. Adding specific details about the content of each magazine (say, using article titles) will add persuasiveness. Your memo needs revision for organization both at the P level (topic sentences, single topic) and at the argument level (you need to specify criteria and compare them consistently). Finally, you need to provide details about the visitors to this office: who are they, and what would they like in a magazine?
