My English Class Experience
The 9 course outcomes for English 2010 are as follows: Write in multiple
genres. Appropriately adapt strategies of argumentation for a given writing
situation. Appropriately adapt style and design for a given writing situation.
Approach reading and research critically and rhetorically, choosing appropriate
research strategies for a particular writing task. Conceive, draft, and revise many
kinds of documents, and manage these processes independently. Cite sources
appropriately for the writing situation, including using an academic system of
citation with a high degree of proficiency. Understand and respond critically to a
civic conversation and become a legitimate participant in that conversation. Work
collaboratively on writing tasks with other writers. Edit their writing so that it
contains a minimum of surface error.
Throughout the semester the course outcomes have been achieved
throughout my writing assignments in many ways. By having to write essays on
different stand points and genres such as memoir, evaluation, position and PSA it
has allowed me to understand the different types of genres. With having to peer
review all of our essays; it helped me to address other ways to revise a rough draft
other then just grammar errors. For the PSA assignment I felt that all the course
outcomes were really addressed, and put together to complete the whole picture of
English 2010.

Throughout out all of the assignments, the hardest decisions were to decide
what to write about. On my first two assignments I wrote about a personal
experience, that I have always felt rather easy to express on paper. But after I
received my grade for those papers, I felt extremely discouraged about my writing,
especially on my topic. So I made the decision to write about something not so
personal.
For my last two assignments: position and PSA, I wrote about wild horses
and the BLM holding facilities. I felt this was a topic that I could still relate to, and
still be able to get some good research on. After completing the position paper, I felt
that it was a good paper that was based on a lot of research. But I still was not very
confident that I would receive a good grade on it. After receiving my grade, I did
better then my previous two assignments but still felt discouraged. During my PSA
assignment, I decided that I was going to make a movie to make it more touching to
the public. Once I completed that assignment, I felt really good about what I had
completed.
When it came to peer reviews for our assignments, I did not find these
extremely useful. There was some feedback that I received from my peers that I took
into consideration, but overall I think that my peers just did a peer review because
they had too. They were extremely long and thorough which I think exhausted my
peers and myself on completing one. A lot of the questions seemed repetitive, and I
think that my peers just answered the questions with whatever they could think of
to get something written down. While finalizing my papers, I did not really use any

of the feedback that was from the peer review sheets other then some grammar and
paragraph corrections.
While doing peer reviews for other students, such as Jazmin and Natalie. I
gave them suggestions on grammar, and also other ways to add more pathos into
their papers. When speaking with Jazmin, she felt she needed to add more logos into
her assignment 1, so I helped her to brainstorm. I feel that I helped Jazmin the most
in my peer reviews.
Throughout the peer reviewing process the information that was the most
useful was having someone else read my paper and let me know what grammar
errors I had. I found it useful when my peer would suggest a new paragraph, a
period or a spelling correction. I have always thought it was good to have someone
else read your paper before submission, because when you read your own paper to
yourself you miss a lot of errors.
While going through the process of creating my final portfolio, I chose to
revise assignments 1,2 and 3. Throughout all three-assignment revisions, I made a
lot of corrections to grammar, and MLA formatting. I did not know that my page
numbers were supposed to be at the top of the pages, so that was good to know. I
also corrected some sentence structuring and added a few citations. I added a little
more detail into the sentences that were unclear, and added more specific
information.
