Happy Holidays 1st Grade Families!! Our first graders are dually excited about the snow and upcoming winter break! Unfortunately, the below zero wind chills have kept us indoors for several days. Hopefully, they will get some fun days to play in the snow over break!

Reading ~ e continue to work in our nonfiction unit. e have learned about various text features such as the table of contents, glossary, index, photographs with captions, and diagrams and how they help us learn more when reading a nonfiction book. e!ve also talked about how important it is to not only use our strategies to figure out tricky words, but to also work at figuring out what important words mean in our text. e should stop and check for understanding as we read nonfiction books, asking ourselves, " hat have # learned so far$% &fter reading a nonfiction book, we should be able to share with a friend or grown up the important facts we learned.

Writing ~ e are working hard on our "&ll &bout 'ooks.% (hese are informational pieces about a person, place, or thing that we know a lot about. e have learned how a topic organizer can help us organize our thinking as we write about our topics of expertise. e have also learned how to write a (able of )ontents for our own "&ll &bout 'ooks.%

Math ~ e completed (opic * this week and took the assessment. +ook for it to come home soon with your child!s profile. ,lease review it with your first grader. (hen sign the test and return it to school. e have moved on to (opic - which is on subtraction facts to ./. Science ~ e are learning about sound. e all participated in a video

conference on sound at which we were actively engaged in demonstrations on how sound works. e have also done experiments in our classrooms to teach the concept of vibrations and sound waves. #t is great to see the musical instruments coming in. ,lease remember they are due on 0onday and we want all the students to be prepared to share their at1home creation early next week! 2ext (uesday we will have another in1school program. 3avid 4tokes, a naturalist, will do a program entitled 2ature!s 0usic about the sounds animals make.
