verview of Sco!e and Se"uence


Second graders learn world and #nited States history$ geogra!hy$ economics$ and government by studying more about who %mericans are and where they came from& They e'!lore their own family(s history and learn about distinctive achievements$ customs$ events$ !laces$ or landmarks from long ago and from around the world& The chief !ur!ose of the grade ) curriculum is to hel! students understand that %merican citi*enshi! embraces all kinds of !eo!le$ regardless of race$ ethnicity$ gender$ religion$ and national origin& %merican students come from all countries and continents in the world& % history and social science curriculum should hel! students ac"uire a common understanding of %merican history$ its !olitical !rinci!les$ and its system of government in order to !re!are them for res!onsible !artici!ation in our schools and civic life&
+n this curriculum framework$ the four disci!lines of history$ geogra!hy$ economics$ and civics and government are integrated in the learning standards$ they are not !resented in four se!arate strands& % coding system has been used throughout to indicate disci!linary content stressed in a standard: (H) history, (G) geography, (E) e onomi s, and (!) i"i s and go"ernment#

Second graders study world and #nited States history$ geogra!hy$ economics$ and government by learning more about who %mericans are and where they came from& They e'!lore their own family(s history and listen to or read a variety of teacher, or student,selected stories about- distinctive individuals$ !eo!les$ achievements$ customs$ events$ !laces$ or landmarks from long ago and around the world& Students learn more economic conce!ts by identifying !roducers$ consumers$ buyers$ and sellers in their own communities&

Students should be able to:

(H) /& 0'!lain the information that historical timelines convey and then !ut in chronological order events in the student(s life (e&g&$ the year he or she was born$ started school$ or moved to a new neighborhood) or in the history of countries studied& (H) 1& 2escribe how ma!s and globes de!ict geogra!hical information in different ways& (3) 4& 5ead globes and ma!s and follow narrative accounts using them& (3$ H)
