Bosnia-Herzegovina will be the only country making its World Cup debut in Brazil next year. Mexicos Javier Hrnandez is a third generation World Cup player, having followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. There are eight former World Cup winners and all eight have made it to the 2014 World Cup. Goals by the top scorers in qualifying: Luis Suarez (Uruguay), Robin van Persie (Netherlands) and Deon McCaulay (Belize). This will be the 20th World Cup and hosts Brazil are the only team that will have participated in all 20.

There will be 32 teams taking part, and there have been this many participating countries in the competition ever since 1998. Germany have played 99 World Cup matches and in their first group match will become the first team to reach 100. A total of 202 national teams played at least one 2014 World Cup qualifier, nine more than the 193 members of the United Nations. By population, at 317 million, the United States are the biggest country involved in the 2014 World Cup. The World Cup was once previously hosted by Brazil. In 1950, neighbouring Uruguay claimed the trophy.
