3. Learning Target: I can identify types of bullying and know how to be an ally. 4. Key Vocabulary: bully, ally, by stander, cyberbullying, types of bullying 5. Essential Questions: What kinds of bullying do you see in your everyday lives? How can we become an ally instead of a bystander? 6. Materials: Video: Imagine a world where being gay was the norm, smart board to record students brainstorms, paper, pencils. 7. Anticipatory Set: 5 minTo begin, I will start with the quote, Sticks and stones and have the students finish the quote. We will have a discussion about what that quote means and what they think we are going to be talking about today and why its important to talk about. When we discuss why its important to talk about it we will record their ideas on the smartboard, and it will help the students get in the frame of mind to be an active ally. Teaching 8/9. Input/modeling: 30 min After the anticipatory set, we will be discussing the different types of bullying in todays society such as: cyber bullying, and all types of physical, mental and emotional abuse. We will also discuss what these look like and what it means to be a bully, bystander or an ally.

Once we have discussed these, I will explain the video they are about to watch. - The video shows what it would be like if being gay were normal (ensure to use quotations when speaking this too, so that there is the emphasis that there is no real definition for normal when it comes to sexual identity) - In the video there are different forms of bullying, and I would like the students to identify the types of bullying they see. - Remind the students that this is not a true story, but a video that helps put things into perspective. -Remind the students that the focus of the video for the purpose of todays lesson is not being gay or straight but the bullying that takes place in the video. ** I will ask the students to identify the types of bullying they see taking place during the video.?? After these have been reminded to the students, we will watch the film. The film is about 20 minutes long. After the video has played I will ask the students to silently reflect on how the video made them feel. After they have had just a minute or two to think, I will ask the students to write about what they saw, felt, heard and if they have any ideas on what they would have done to become an ally during this video. While the students are writing their own reflections, I will write mine on the smartboard, they will not be able to see it until after we have had a brief discussion about what the students wrote. After the students are finished writing their reflections, we will then have a discussion about what they wrote and how they can become an ally in our own school. 10. Checking for understanding: before the video begins we will be discussing the different types of bullying in todays society such as: cyber bullying, and all types of physical, mental and emotional abuse. Once we have discussed these, I will explain the video they are about to watch. - In the video there are different forms of bullying, and I would like the students to identify the types of bullying they see. -Remind the students that the focus of the video for the purpose of todays lesson is not being gay or straight but the bullying that takes place in the video. ** I will ask the students to identify the types of bullying they see taking place during the video.?? and we will go back over the different types of bullying we see around school. 11. Guided Practice: 10 minThe guided practice will be when the students see my reflection as well as when they are writing their reflection about what they saw, heard, and felt during the video. They will also write what they would have done to be an ally for the girl in the video. During this time it is to be silent. 12. Assessment: The assessment will be verbal, when we have a class discussion about what they saw in the video as well as their written reflection on how they would be an ally to the girl in the video. 13. Closure: 5 min: After we have had a class discussion over the reflection, I will ask the students to brainstorm on the smartboard, ways to stop bullying. One by one the students will come up to the smart board and write their idea. We will have a debrief where the

students can ask questions if they have any. 14. Independent practice: The independent practice will be shown throughout the rest of the students year. They will demonstrate ways of being an ally when there is a situation of bullying occurring in their presence.
