People began practicing Islam in Arabia, a large peninsula covered mostly by harsh desert. The prophet of Islam was Muhammad, who preached his beliefs to the people of Mecca, his hometown. Muhammad moved from Mecca to the city of Medina, where he built up the Muslim community.

What are some features of Arabias geography?


Arabia is a huge peninsula, south of modern Iraq and across the Red Sea from Africa. Arabia has an extremely harsh environment: mostly desert, a very dry climate, and no permanent rivers.

Most people in Arabia lived in areas that got some rain or near oases where water could be found.
