November Editorial: Edwards Apple Orchard

written by Evelyn Reyes
Since 1964, Edwards Apple Orchard has been a popular destination for residents looking for a delicious snack or a quiet environment to spend time with family. Every year, the opening of Edwards Apple Orchard is highly anticipated because it is the only place in town that offers warm apple cider donuts and freshlypressed apple cider. However, that is not all there is to love about Edwards Apple Orchard. Edwards Apple Orchard is a family-owned company and has a history in this town. Many of the orchards customers come from generations of families who have been born and raised in Poplar Grove. Mary Beth Smith, a staff member at Edwards Apple Orchard, is the perfect example. The Viking Voice newspaper staff met Mary Beth when we visited the orchard. After asking her a few questions, we learned that not only had she grown up in Poplar Grove, but she was also a North Boone High School alumni from the graduating class of 1976 and a staff member of the original NBHS Newspaper. In addition to that, the newspaper staff was able to interview Mary Beth and get more information on the orchard. It was a successful season. The good weather has helped us. I enjoy meeting all the lovely people that visit the orchard. I love knowing that I can make them happy with our products. The Viking Voice would like to express great gratitude to Mary Beth Smith and Janine LaDuke for their cooperation and generosity and for making our visit to Edwards Apple Orchard pleasant, as Have donut sales increased this year? The donut sales have seemed to stay the same from previous years, but there are always large crowds for donuts!

it always is. Without the kind and helpful employees at the orchard, the orchard simply wouldnt be the same. With great employees and delicious food, the only thing that could ever make the orchard better than it already is would be that it was open year-round. UnfortuDoes the tornado that tore through the orchard in 2008 still have an impact? After the tornado, Edwards has gained more guests from interest in the new building and food items. Also, the reconstruction of the barn has resulted in a larger kitchen. The new kitchen is three times bigger than the old one and we love it. The tornado was certainly a mixed blessing.

Skyler Yunk

Novembers Player of the Month, is the well accomplished, Cross Country team participant, Skyler Yunk. The sophomore runner was a part of sectionals, made it to allconference, and won a race at Rock Cut State Park. As a dedicated competitor, Yunk tended to run a mile to warm up about 30 minutes before a meet, followed by stretching and striding out to keep his muscles invigorated. During that time, he plans out a strategy for a race. Skyler is not only determined to win because of his natural competitive edge, but partially because of his cousins success which drives him to train in the summer. After high school, Skyler wishes to go to a college in The Big Ten. When asked about what he hopes is in store for next years season, he replied, I look forward to the fun that well have and hopefully a better season than this one!His main goal for the 2014 Cross Country season is to qualify for state and we at North Boone High School wish him luck in his pursuit to win big.

Mr. Arenzs Thought of The Month

By understanding that connection you have with someone, and acknowledging that connection, this is how you show someone appreciation.

Appreciation is something easy to talk about, but so difficult to really do. Sure, many people do their Im thankful for.. on their FaceBook accounts daily, or talk about it here and there, but are we really appreciating all that we have? I often think to myself, I am lucky to know this person or have this job, but how do I go beyond thankfulness and actually appreciate it? To truly appreciate some-

one or something, you have got to make an effort and go out of your way to show it. Do something thoughtful in return, and not just some gift, but a well thought out gift. See, it is not that a gift must be bought or must be of rare existence, it is in its sentimentality that shows its appreciative nature. We all connect with one another on some level, at some point even your greatest enemy is con-

nected to you. By understanding that connection you have with someone, and acknowledging that connection, this is how you show someone appreciation. So before you break the bank showing someone how thankful you are to them, show them how much you appreciate them. Give them the time or thought that they really want from you.

Have there ever been any near-death experiences in your life and if so, what was it? One experience was when I had heat stroke from hiking 15 miles down and then up the Grand Canyon. The temp was 133 in the sun. I almost fell off the edge and am still unsure how I made it the last 2 miles. It took two days to recover and I started teaching at NBHS a couple weeks later.

Foreign Language Clubs
Both Spanish and French clubs attended the Milwaukee Folk Festival on November 22. The Milwaukee Folk Festival is a fair that has a variety of countries and nations showing their culture and customs. Many countries offer foods, traditional dances, and clothing that are specific to them. They also offer samples of the food from their countries and if you like it you can buy the food. If its not the food bringing people to the show, some countries offer dancing that is shown to the public. From across the fair you can see objects and figures from other countries. The best part about the fair, according to students are the gifts you are able to buy. Senorita Paulli, who escorted students to the festival said her favorite part was the Bulgarian dancers. The dance consisted of having a dance off like dance fighting. Its a dance between bigger vs. smaller men. She also said her favorite food to get from the fair is stuffed grape leaves, a food featured from the Middle East. The Foreign Language Clubs will be having a small Christmas gift exchange December 10. See Mrs. Mylin or Ms. Selchow for more information.

Politics Take the Spotlight in American Government Classes

The candidates are nervous; you can see them try to calm themselves, because before they know it, its game time. Debate time, actually. For the second year now, Mr. Arenz and Mr. Augustine assign their American Government students a very special project. One in which the students play the role of influential, and sometimes not as well known, politicians. Students work in groups and select one of the members to be the candidate; the others act as the campaign team. Together, they must present themselves to teachers and staff for donations to their campaigns. Basic linethe better you know your candidate, the better you present yourself as that politician, the more likely you are to receive a donation from a staff member. All of the campaigning builds up to a class debate; but not just an ordinary debate where one side argues another. Mr. Arenz and Mr. Augustine lead a panel in questioning each of the candidates, who have prepared statements on topics ranging from gun rights, gay marriage, taxes, education, and foreign affairsand thats only to name a few! The day of the debate, the candidates spoke on stage in front of their peers to present their statements. This was treated as an actual debate, as candidates were given an allotted time during which they could present their own opinions and rebuttal anothers statement. After the debate, students discussed the effectiveness of each candidates presentation and voted to determine who won each debate. On the whole, this sounds like a great way to enhance competition and understanding of politics and the campaigning process. But when you look at the finer details of this assignment, you can see how the students must perform in order to achieve maximum understanding of the topics they present upon. Students were encouraged to create a webpage for their candidates; they were prone to both the positive and negative effects of campaigning, which includes mudslinging and denial of funding; researching politicians in order to understand what they support and oppose. When asked how he views the value of this assignment, Mr. Augustine responded, Its a competitive process. But it is a process that prepares them for so much more than just an exam. It shows them to value their voting choices in the future, and hopefully make an educated decision because they have done the research. There is a lot of pressure and build up, especially towards the end of the project, but they always seem to come through in the end, said Mr. Arenz when asked how he feels about his students performance. I think they get a much better understanding of the chaos that a campaign entails come election time. I'm very proud of the students and thankful for all the staff support along the way, especially Mr. Finley and Mr. Augustine.

It is safe to say that, for some of us, when we watch movies like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows or Star Trek: Into Darkness we turn from everyday movie goers into complete fanboys and girls. Such is the case with the latest installment of The Hunger Games trilogy. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hit theaters November 22, and made over $296 million in its opening weekend. While its predecessor The Hunger Games made audiences worldwide rave with excitement, Catching Fire has soared beyond what critics were anticipating, and has made us all crave to see the third and final movie, Mockingjay. The movie begins as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) returns home safely after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games, along with fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). By winning, this means they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a Victors Tour of all the districts. Along the way, Katniss senses the rebellion among the districts is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) prepares the 75th Hunger Gamesa competition that could change Panem forever. As avid fans of The Hunger Games trilogy, The Viking Voice staff could not wait to see this motion picture. With the success of the first installment of the series making its appearance in early 2012, audiences from around the world have been awaiting the arrival of Catching Fire to see how the young cast would portray the continuing story line. We checked in with students from North Boone HS to find out what they had to say about the new Hunger Games film. After reading all the books, you want to see something visual and see what can be made into a movie, said sophomore Hannah Vassmer. When asked what makes this film so good Hannah replied, Its definitely one of those movies that sticks with you after youve seen it. The ending was the best part of the movie, in my opinion, because it was just like the bookit leaves you with unanswered questions and wanting to know more, said sophomore Anna Krajewski. Senior Mati Garci says, While she enjoyed the whole movie, the scenes with the monkeys surprised her the most. Freshmen Vanesa Ortega also saw the new film. She says, I liked the conspiracy aspect bestit made the role of Katniss even better. Freshmen Sebastian Volkening said he liked how Jennifer Lawrence really made Katniss Everdeen come to life. All in all, in sounds like this movie was a hit! Check out Catching Fire in theaters now!

November Trend: Winter Accessories
Winter is here ladies and gentlemen, which means you might want to bundle up AND still look fashionable. Taking a vote from our very own NBHS students, most of them preferred a pair of gloves and a hat, over mittens and a scarf. Lets get started shall we? Gloves: Gloves are the perfect way to keep your hands warm and enhance your appearancethe ultimate two in one. One of the many popular types of gloves are the half-fingers. Sometimes these gloves are long as well, so it also warms your arms. These are my personal favorite, due to the fact that I dislike when I try to operate my touch screen devices and they just wont budge through the material. Lets talk leather. Leather gloves are a timeless item. You can wear leather gloves with an elegant coat or a leather biker jacket. How convenient! Hats: Hats are an inevitable piece of fashion. Everywhere you look youre bound to see someone wearing a beanie. Beanies are hats you can use for a casual day or to compliment a fashionable outfit. You can rock a beanie no matter who you are. Veil hats are also trending. Theyre cute, creative, chic, and definitely worth trying. Ill be honest, when I first laid eyes on one, I was doubting the creation. But when you see how artistically unique it is, you fall in love. The beanie/veil mesh generally goes with a dressed up outfit; it definitely makes you stand out in the best way possible. Be bold this season, wear bold colored gloves and hats, stand out from the crowd, be original, be you. Xx
