CLASS NOTES

WEEK1: CLASS NOTES The class is to help non-music majors in elementary education to learn techniques on how to teach songs, music, games, dance, and rhythmic activities that have to do with not only music, but literature and culture. Handouts: These are nice to use to reference back to what class talked about and what is expected in the class. Course Syllabus Course Expectations 110 Ways to Say Very Good UW-Platteville SoE Lesson Planning Template A Guide to Taking Lecture Notes Music/Games: I really liked being active in the classroom using these. They really engage everyone and are something that I as a teacher can use in my own classroom. Milling to Music Icebreakers: *To get to know your students. *Can be used with younger students to teach: *Spelling *To make friends *For math *Problem solving Hello My Friends P. 8 Games: Saying Hello P. 10 The More We Get Together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eeumVrD_5w The Music Time is Over P. 13 Reflection: The first day of class was really fun. I am excited to start learning how to teach music and find new ways to incorporate it into the classroom. I really learned from this class the importance of using songs not only to introduce the students to one another, but to get them warmed up and ready for the activity that they will be participating in. The class I feel will be helpful to me as a future teacher and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the semester will teach me. WEEK 2: CLASS NOTES Hands-On Part: Ukulele: o Jumping fleas o Four strings o Fretes- not all instruments have them; like violin o Do not need a pick just thumbnail to play Chords- 3 or more notes at one time; accompany a song Accompany= go with; Accompanist= piano player Whatever you decide to do you must prepare. Be the best you can be= practice in front of a mirror Dont be afraid to sing Be careful of range. Piggy Bank Song Do not criticize your students. Be comfortable in front of people. Make kids feel at home in the classro

Reflection: I had a lot of fun in class this week. I loved learning about how to play the ukulele and actually getting to play it. I also learned the importance of ensuring students that they can do it. Also never make a student feel like you are criticizing them when they give a wrong answer or if they cant do something. I learned that it is important to make them feel like they can and make the experience positive. In lecture, I learned the importance of being comfortable in front of the class. It is important that you are ready to teach and get involved with your students and that is exactly what I want to get out of this course. I also am learning my techniques I can use in my classroom with music. I am excited for the rest of the semester and learn more about how to make music with my students. WEEK 3: CLASS NOTES Reflection: This weeks class was a lot of fun I loved learning how to use the various instruments that we can use in our classrooms. I learned so much about not only how to play the instruments, but the techniques of how to have students get the instruments out, what they should do when they get it, and how to have them put it away. I will definitely use these tips in my own classroom because it seems to make things run smoothly. I also learned that it is important to feel comfortable in front of your students. That we shouldnt be afraid to use gestures, facial expressions, and body language when we teach to ensure the classroom doesnt become dull. I am gaining so much from this class and cant wait to learn more. o Patsche= to pat in German o Keep rhythm of the words by patsche while singing. o Expressive Language: It is important. Stewart Stotts Integrating arts in a program can make a difference. It involves a number of things Use of gestures to tell a story Imagination of mind; if you lose it life gets dull Dynamics and volume are important Use loud voice only when you need to. Use you teacher voice all the time= the students will get dull and wont do things Gestures, body language, and facial expressions are needed. Intonations Book- But No Elephants Jerry S. For books- do things beside reading and you do not have to read verbatim. WEEK 4: CLASS NOTES Reflection: This week was a lot of fun. I liked being able to physically play the different instruments we can use within the classroom. I have found that playing instruments, sometimes, is not as easy as it looks. You really have to pay attention to what you are doing because it takes effort and focus to play the instruments at times. The two videos that were played in the second half of class are great examples of how to incorporate and illustrate music with other things. Like I stated above I would use these to teach about the different instruments and the sounds they make. I would also show how music can create a story with tone and tempo. It gives students an opportunity to relate the instruments to something. Instruments: Xylophones and Autoharp- used with the song Autumn and The Wind The wind is a piggy bank song= using familiar melodies and putting words to it. You can create your own words to songs too. March song- creative expression= find out which way to say it feels better to use with expression Goodbye Winter- is from Goodnight Ladies a song from Music Man

Choir Chimes- Ukulele- Autoharp o Harmony instruments they are for accompaniment. o They play the harmony chords which are more than one sound at a time. o To play choir chimes: Flick you wrist Do not touch the part that hits the metal o When playing the autoharp do not just strum the words this is not accompaniment. Use long and short strums for the chords. Xylophone Choir Chimes o Melody instruments that play the melody o They plan one sound at a time. Carnival of Animals and Peter the Wolf= Videos that use music to tell a story. o Can teach tone, about instruments, to illustrate moods. o You could use the Carnival of Animals in the classroom to teach students about the different instruments and the variety of sounds they can play. It could teach them about tone and tempo. The animals can illustrate and help remind students about which instruments play what tempo. It could also help students connect learning about animals and instruments since they could decide which instruments represent each animal. I also would use this video maybe as a possible introduction to a field trip to the zoo. WEEK 5: CLASS NOTES: Reflection: I really liked class this week I found that illustrating the story with instruments is very beneficial to students. I think it is a neat interactive way to get students involved in the story. I really want to use this in my own classroom because I feel students will have fun with it and all types of learners can participate. I cant wait to teach Wednesday for the class I think it will be fun. I also like learning about new instruments like the boom whackers. I can see students having a lot of fun with them and many other instruments. Anasi and the Moss- Covered Rock- a lot of fun!!! o Illustrated by Janet Steven and Retold by Eric A. Kimmel. o Use for third grade. o Use instruments for words that repeat. o To help with comprehension use the 5 ws: who, what, when, where, and why. o Other things: Can use other book, stories, or even songs. Use props to help students see what is being told. The Triplets and Haunted House: Boom whackers- Important to remember to read stories with expression. WEEK 6: CLASS NOTES Reflection: I learned so many good songs that I could use to teach students about different instruments and how to illustrate a story. I really liked all of them and I found from teaching it is not always as easy as it looks. My lesson with my partner went good, but I felt there was a lot of chaos since we had so much going on. If I had to do it again I probably would pick a shorter story that I could do more with. Class was a lot of fun and I cant wait to get to teach again. WEEK 7: CLASS NOTES Reflection: Even though I wasnt in class I heard you guys worked on drawing pictures. It sounds like you had a lot of fun and I wish I could have been there. I had a hard time getting notes from someone other than what was done in class. One thing I know about telling a story is it always good to allow students to draw what they hear so they can connect with it. WEEK 8: CLASS NOTES Reflection: Class was very informational this week. I liked learning how to incorporate other subjects with music. I like the use of a holiday because I feel holidays are easy enough and have a lot of resources for teachers to incorporate them into all

subjects. I am glad we got the chance to do research ourselves for a holiday because I have seen many neat ideas that have been used. I liked the activities we did in class with the holidays and Star Spangled Banner it really got us thinking about do we truly know all the holidays or words to a song. I think it is important to test students because it gets their brains working. Rhythmic Speaking; Stop, Look, and Listen Martin Luther King Jr. Day- Drinking Gourd, Lizzies Story Strategies for Reading Comprehension: Visualize Predict Schema Inference Synthesis WEEK 9: CLASS NOTES Reflection: Class was a lot of fun this week it was fun being able to move around. I really like a lot of the activities we did they are definitely movement activities I would like to use in my own classroom. I cant wait to get a chance to teach the class a fun movement/music activity and see all the ones the others chose to do. I really love to dance and am excited about this weeks lesson. Movements: Non-locomotive: o No skipping, hopping. o For those who are self conscious o Great for those in wheelchairs or physically disabled Locomotive: o Where you actual do motion. o Walking, swinging. Movement Activities: Bunny Hop Syncopated Clock Kevin Quinns Shadow Dancing Tummy Tango Bongo Color Dance uses scarves Leaf Man- used leaves while reading a story WEEK 10: CLASS NOTES Reflection: This was a fun week for movement activities in confined spaces. It was neat to see the many different activities everyone came up with and the varying approaches everyone did. I felt that my movement activity went well and it was fun to get up in front of the class. I took a lot away from class and how to use movement in confined spaces, which is exactly what my classroom will be. I cant wait for next week and the movement activities we will do in open spaces. WEEK 11: CLASS NOTES Reflection: I had a lot of fun this week in class. It was fun dancing around and getting to learn many other dances. I love to dance and I was in dance since I was three and so being able to do some dancing was a lot of fun for me. Even though I my classroom will be too small for these dances I think I could use them possibly for indoor recess, especially if my class cant go outside. Overall, a fun week of dance and I cant wait to see what the rest of our time in class will bring. Fjaskern Music concept of accelerando.

Nonverbal Sasha All face teacher for instruction and then face partner. Yankee Doodle Interesting to see two different lessons WEEK 12: CLASS NOTES Reflection: This week was really a good lesson to learn. I learned a lot about how to treat students with disabilities and how to help them be successful in the classroom. It was really important to understand the disability first before trying to teach because it lets the student know you are there to help. I feel this is an important topic everyone should learn because a lot of people are misinformed about disabilities and the students. Overall, I liked learning this week about ways we can get students involved in music to help them learn. Disabilities: Cognitive, vision, physical, hearing, and many more. Handout: Learning Disabilities and disorders. The Brain Left side- math, reading, music, language processing, logic, rhythm Right Side- global thinking, spatial reasoning, humming, playing instruments, patterns, perception of form, melodies
