What is self-esteem?

Self-esteem may be described as a persons view of their worth and may be influenced by how well they do in school, their appearance and or by the judgment of important people in their lives. Self-esteem is likely to change depending upon the situation or company we keep. If we are with a group of friends who we trust, we may feel more confident to voice our opinions. If we are with people who call us names, we may feel unloved, uncomfortable, or shy. We develop ideas about how adequate and effective we are from reactions of people around us. How we see ourselves can influence our decision-making and our ability to act appropriately in many situations. If we are confident and see ourselves as valuable members of a group, we will be more likely to stand up for ourselves in an uncomfortable situation.
