Sports Profession Comparison Football & Basketball

Introduction
As the NFL and NBA leagues are the top two for the most popular sports leagues in America, there is a lot of competition that comes along with being in these leagues. In order to get into one of these leagues, the scouts look at mostly big D1 schools, which, you currently are enrolled in Northwestern University.

As you have told me before, you like to work hard to get better and achieve what your main goal is, and from the skills that you have stated, the two professions that would be best suited for you is to go into the NBA or NFL leagues. The Football and Basketball careers will be further analyzed into a specific breakdown so it provides with more than enough information in order to help you chose what the best fit is for you.

As you have expressed, the area that is more important to you and should be more emphasized towards is salary. As salary is important to you and should be emphasized more than others, I also think you should consider Job Outlook. Knowing the demand of the career that you choose will be important as well. You would not want to go into a career which has no demand in it. As well as Job Outlook, you need to take Environment into consideration. In order for your job to run smoothly, you should have a comfortable work environment. As these ties into environment, you should know the location of where you would be working and if your job requires to travel or not. As many people who work like promotions, you should know if you will receive any health concerns.

Salary
Salary is the most important aspect, so choosing a career in which pays good money should be the first thing that gets considered. Everyone needs a solid pay in order to support their family, so its usually the first thing that is considered when looking for a career.

Since a lot of players are needed in the NFL, which include starters, backups, and their backups, all NFL rosters consists of 53 players per team. In the NFL, since they are so many players on each team roster, the amount of money is basically distributed upon the talent level each player brings to the team. According to Yahoo sports, the average salary of an average NFL player would be 1.9 million dollars. Which is low compared to what other star players or other players that are better than you will receive.

In the NBA, each roster consists of 15 NBA players. Since each team only has 15 rosters per team, the team has more money to work with. This also could mean that you could be making more money being an average player compared to what you will get paid as an average player in the NFL. According to Yahoo sports, the average salary per athlete is 5.15 million dollars. Like in the NBA, you get paid accordingly, based on how much talent you bring to the teams table. Suppose if you were an average player in both sports, you would make more money in the NBA because they

have more money to work with and fewer amounts of athletes to pay.

Job Outlook
People should look to go into a career where they are a lot of job openings. As this will help you to find a job easily. In this case, you have a greater chance to get into the NFL then the NBA because of the injuries that occur during games and the roster sizes are much larger of the NFL then they are of the NBA.

In the NFL, the job outlook is pretty good. Because every year there is a draft, in which teams get to select players from college to bring on to their teams. Teams are always looking to upgrade their rosters, sign backups, and injuries happen, so they look for replacements. So you are always going to have some type of chance to get with a team even if you didnt get drafted or just sitting at home. As stated in the Chicago Tribune, current NFL QB was in California co-managing a market company while he got a call from the Chicago Bears, a NFL team, to sign with them.

In the NBA, the job outlook is not as good as the NFL. Since they are only 15 athletes on each NBA roster, it is harder to get signed. Unlike the NFL, in the NBA they have a DLeague, which is a league to develop young athletes which teams think have potential if they develop them. So most players get called up from the D-League in case of an injury happens. Or in most cases, the teams usually stick with the players they have and rotate them in and out of the starting lineup. The best way to get on to a NBA roster is through the draft or you show teams that you really have the talent that most teams are looking for. So the job outlook isnt as bright as the NFL but if you do have the talent that teams are looking for, you will surely make the NBA.

Location
Location is important to consider. You must consider that weather may be a factor in what sport you chose. You must also consider the fact that some places are going to be cold and some places are going to warm climates.

In the NFL all or most games are played in outside weather. This means most of the stadiums are open, while some may be dorms. If you prefer to play an outside sport, then this is the sport for you. If you dont mind playing in different weathers, which is a possibility depending on your team schedule, then you might consider the NFL. The NFL is mostly played outside with the exception of a few teams which have dorms. In the NFL, a lot of teams are in the colder climate, which could affect your decision making.

But in the NBA, all games are played indoor in closed arenas or stadiums. If you are the type of person that likes to stay warm and cuddly, and dont like the cold weather or outdoor sports, then the NBA is for you. In the NBA, all stadiums are indoor and no matter where you go to play, you will be playing inside. If you are the person who likes to stay inside and isnt one of those outdoors people, then you may prefer to join the NBA. If you were to join the NBA, you dont have to worry about what the weather is in that specific city.

Work Environment
The work environment for both sports, the teams have to put in long practice hours and hours getting ready for game day or practices. They work with the same people every day.

For the NBA, they dont have a set schedule. According to the website The Nest, the athletes are usually traveling, or getting ready for night games, or even resting because of exhaustion from traveling, or late night games and socializing. During all practices, they are no spectators. It usually doesnt get that loud, and most of the time you will hear the coach blowing the whistle. Most of the time the coach talks and directs the players what to do. The NBA is usually a very stressful job. They are constantly with trainers to keep themselves in shape. According to The Nest, some players, usually big name players, have to be part of pre-game and post-game interviews. In these interviews they get asked difficult questions.

In the NFL, they also have very tough practices like the NBA. But since the NBA has more games played, the NFL doesnt consist of more practices in a week. Since football players will only play a game a week, they might have like 3 or 4 practices. But, like the NBA, usually big name players will have to attend pre-game and post-game interviews where they have to answer difficult questions. Also the practices could get very loud which could effect on how the players comprehend the plays. Unlike the NBA, some of the practices are open to the public to watch.

Health Concerns
Like in all sports, they will be injuries which could be life threatening, and major and minor injuries. Well both, basketball and football are rough sports and you are definitely bound to get injured once or twice in a professional athletes career.

In the NBA, youre going to find that many of the injuries that occur are usually knee injuries or injuries that have to do with your legs. You might here and there you might hear about a instance when someone breaks an arm. You might also find that broken fingers, noses are also few common injuries that may occur. They are injuries that might cause you to sit out for a season or injuries which cause you to sit out for a few weeks or months, depending on when you got injured and type of injury. A really common injury coming to be known these days are ACL, MCL, PCL tears, which are ligaments in your knee.

In the NFL, you are going to find that most injures that occur to athletes are usually head or upper body injuries. According to physioroom.com, 5 football injuries that can occur are, hamstring strain, hernia, ACL tear, sprained ankle, and knee cartilage tear. Playing in the NFL is basically like putting your life in risks. I say this because many players these days have concussions and rib injuries. These injuries have lifelong affects and could put your career in jeopardy. But even though they are many of these injuries that can occur they can be prevented. The NFL has set rules which state that a player cannot hit anything above the shoulders which could cause concussions. The NFL is trying to make this sport as safe as possible by putting extra padding in helmets and shoulder pads, and knee pads. According to physioroom.com, 5 football

Analysis and Recommendation

The purpose in writing this report was to compare two different careers and see what best suits Mr. Zack Brown. This report compared two different sports league, the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Several areas were analyzed, which are, Salary, how much each job pays, the Job Outlook, how many openings they are, the location where you work at, the work environment at the work place, and the health concerns that come along with playing the two sports.

Even though they are pros and cons for both the NBA and NFL, after fully analyzing the two sports in detail, I would recommend that you go into the NBA. Even though some cons of going into the NBA is that you have to travel for 41 of the 82 games. Also it may be hard to find a roster spot. But I truly believe that they are way many more pros that outweigh the cons. Firstly, because the average pay per player is much higher than the NFL. As stated before, they are fewer players on a roster on a NBA team then they are on an NFL team which means you have a chance to bring in bigger paychecks. I believe it to be a better work environment. You wont have to worry about playing in the cold because you will be always playing indoors.
