You need to be able to: 1. Explain what an element is and recognise the atom as the smallest unit of an element. 2. Explain the difference between an atom and a molecule. 3. Know the elements and their symbols( at least the first 20 and other common elements) 4. Describe the model of the internal structure of an atom in which the negatively charged electrons move around the central nucleus in certain energy levels only. 5. Explain what the atomic number of an element indicates. 6. Determine the number of electrons possessed by a neutral atom of a given element given the number of protons in its nuclei. 7. Determine neutrons by subtracting protons from mass number. 8. Explain how elements are arranged in the periodic table. 9. Recognise that elements in the same group tend to be similar. 10. Recognise the larger the atom the more reactive it becomes, relate this to the periodic table. 11. Understand the general properties of the groups of the periodic table focusing on group 1 and group 8. 12. Explain what radioactivity is and why it occurs. 13. State the three types of radioactivity and their penetrating powers
