Courtoy, Jason C. (2013) "Economic Restraint: Violent-Sensitive Economies and the Likelihood of Genocide in Africa." Abstract: Quantitative genocide research focuses on the development and modeling of risk factors. This research agenda has been quite fruitful in understanding the risk factors associated with genocide. However, the factors that have resulted from these studies suffer from a boy who cried wolf syndrome. They are far more common to conicts than the rarity of genocide cases. Part of the problem is that the literature ignores negative cases and focuses on comparing genocides to genocides, which often occurs during or after an armed conict. This forces models of genocide to a strict linear process of escalation. This study theorizes that genocide is a dynamic process of escalation and restraints. Focusing on macro-level economic factors in Africa from 1960-2000, it then tests whether a violent-sensitive economy, one with permanent structures that would be disrupted by large-scale violence, can serve as an effective restraint mechanism on the escalation of violence toward genocide. Courtoy, Jason C. (2013) "State Repression Is About the Communicative Effect?: Repression and Public Opinion in Northern Ireland." Abstract: The state repression literature has persistently found that when states are met with dissent they respond with repression. However, the literature on the effectiveness of repression, or the repression-dissent nexus, has found every kind of relationship. Why then do governments continue to use it even after passed failures? One theory is that repression is less about dissent, and more about communication. The theory is tested using Northern Ireland survey data. Courtoy, Jason C. (2012) "Periodization of the Khmer Rogues Cultural Genocide: A Research Note." Courtoy, Jason C.
