Body Planes
Sagittal – Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts
Frontal – Lie vertical; divide body into anterior and posterior parts
Transverse – runs horizontal from right to left; divides body in superior and inferior
parts
Superior (Cranial) – Toward the head end or upper part of a structure or the body; above
Inferior (Caudal) – away from the head end or toward the lower part of a structure or
body; below
Lateral – Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side of
Proximal – Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to
the body trunk
Distal – Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the
body trunk
Cervical - Neck
Nape – Back of the neck
Brachial - Arm
Antebrachial - Forearm
Carpel - Wrist
Phalangies – Relating to the bones of the fingers and toes
Thorasic - Chest
Umbilical - Navel
Coxal - Hip
Pubis – Genital region
Inguinal - Groin
Sacral – Between hips
