Viruses Definition, classification, general characteristics, phage structure, replication cycle, one step growth cycle. Microbial genetics Bacterial chromosome, plasmid, genetic exchanges in bacteria conjugation, transformation, transfection, transduction, recombination, chromosome mapping, use of bacteriophages in genetic studies. Bacterial diseases Hostparasite relationship, epidemiology of cholera, typhoid and tuberculosis, epidemiology of certain viral diseases (hepatitis, influenza and AIDS), diseases of respiratory tract, urinary tract and intestinal tract, antimicrobials. Microorganisms as symbionts Microbial associations (kappa particles in Paramoecium, lichens), microbe plant association (mycorrhizae/ nodules), microbeanimal association (rumen).
