Nicholas Wall Middle/High School Theory Integrated Lesson Plan Reflection The integrated lesson plan I worked on was

for a science lesson in 8th grade in a themed school. I worked with Jordan Ryder and Rick Stuart, who were giving lessons in business and math, respectively. We worked as a team to discuss our theme and how we could relate our lessons in our classes to our theme of sports. Many middle schools often have a themed environment, and so this lesson plan assignment was good practice for what we might possibly do in a middle school class. We three decided together for a broad theme of sports, and we revolved our lesson plans around this theme accordingly. Mr. Stuart, becoming a math teacher, wrote his lesson plan to be in an 8th grade math class. Miss Ryder, becoming a business marketing teacher, wrote her lesson plan to be in an 8th grade business class. I, becoming a science teacher, wrote my lesson plan to an 8th grade science class. We all assumed we had the same students in each class, and that we had two students who needed special accommodations. For my science class, I had my students use the lesson they had in their business class, and use that in their science project. Thus, my lesson and Miss Ryders lesson was very closely connected. Mr. Stuarts lesson, though using the same theme of sports, was not connected to my or Miss Ryders lesson and did not build on either lesson. I chose to build upon Miss Ryders business lesson because I thought it would be a good concept for the students to use, since many concepts in school are inter-related with other classes, such as using proper English while writing scientific papers. Thus, it is important that students know that many concepts taken from one class can be used in

their other classes. This is especially important in middle school, when students are getting ready to enter high school where more classes and concepts become inter-related. It was interesting seeing other teachers viewpoints on a themed lesson. Though we did not spend more than an hour together in total discussing our theme and how we were going to put a lesson together, it was still good practice because we may be asked to connect our lesson plans to a specific theme. I think in the future if I am asked to integrate a lesson plan to a theme with other teachers, I would prefer to connect my lesson with the other teachers lessons, instead of just with a broad theme. I think that students will learn the subject easier if they can use the topic they are learning in one class and bring it into the topic they are learning in the next class. Overall, I think this was a good experience, if for nothing else than it allowed us the opportunity to write a lesson plan while partially working with a team of other teachers while focusing on a theme. As many schools have themes in their lessons, this gave us a look at how working with other cooperating teachers can work and how we might utilize this in our classes. In the future, I think that working with other teachers and themes in the school would be a good idea, as long as we are all given enough time to coordinate our lessons so they are connected and the students can use what they learn throughout all their classes, rather than classes with a broad theme but no overall connection to each other.
