And yet we know he will not tarry. On the contrary, he seems to have stepped on the
P

accelerator and before you know it, a whole year has whizzed past.

An eventful year no doubt, with its share of ups and downs, with both the ups and the

downs contributing to making the year unforgettable.

The year saw the ascendancy of India in sports arena and the long wait for Olympic
N

medals in individual events came to an end in Beijing Olympics by Abinav Bindra winning
Gold and Vijyendra Singh and Sushil Kumar winning Bronze medals.

The launch of the Tata Nano sparked off widespread interest, as did the marriage of
French premier Sarkozy with Carla Bruni.

Our Twentieth Triennial Conference, IOBOA’s 20-20 was conducted in style and would
ever linger in the memory of our Comrades for the meaningful deliberations and successful
conduct with perfection on all fronts.

The U S Elections took centre stage over several months with unprecedented world wide
keen interest even in their primaries. Democract Barack Obama’s Victory was a landmark
event : he became the first African American to be elected president of the United States.

1
All these paled for us when tragedy struck devastatingly at Mumbai. Amidst
the agony and pain emerged the strength and resilience of a city, a Nation and its
people. Hard lessons were learnt. Hard earned positive was wrested from a sea of
negatives - for the first time, a terrorist was captured alive - a breakthrough in
investigation and proof ! An opportunity for India to build on strengths and move
forward.

The economic meltdown has touched lives across the globe, putting the brake on mindless
spending and carefree speculation. Notwithstanding, IOB has swelled its numbers
recruiting as many as 930 officers - 430 specialists & 500 POs. (A further recruitment
of 1250 POs is on the anvil for 2009) The merits of our Banking System - the inherent
strength of Nationalised Banks - has been irrefutably proved. A jubilant yet sobering note on
which to end the year.

A New Year Dawns and with it renewed Hope and Expectations.

IOBOAns are blessed with a wonderful Curtain Raiser for 2009 !

Comrades, we had been persistently pursuing with top management not only for initiating
the process, but also to declare maximum possible vacancies. We are indeed delighted that the
announcement coincides with the New Year - a great gift and a time-tested morale
booster !

We in IOB have always boasted a unique HR approach - progressive partnership that

inspires members to do their best. We sincerely thank our respected CMD Shri S.A. Bhat for
agreeing to declare vacancies in good numbers. Our thanks to our Executive Directors
Shri G. Narayanan and Shri Y.L. Madan for their support. We also specially thank our GM
(PAD) Shri T. Venkat Reddy for his positive and proactive role in readily responding
empathetically to our request for early commencement of promotion process. We also appreciate
his efforts to augment the officers force, completing the recruitment process in record time.

2
Comrades, with 2009 being ushered in on this promising note, we are confident that the
year will prove fruitful and rewarding not only for the IOB family but also IOB’s extended
family.

As we take the first step into 2009 let us remember Comrades, that our well being and
IOB’s are not mutually exclusive but inter-dependent. Let us do our best for our bank -
let commitment to improving CASA and maximum recovery be our mantra for
2009.

The year 2009 should bring happiness to all and the long pursued demand of second
option for pension and a fair and reasonable salary revision would soon become a reality.

Our commitment to serve the society continues and we would be taking up the cause of
rebuilding some of the school buildings of flood ravaged Bihar shortly.

l
ia
We wish every IOBian and his family a Very Very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

o r
May 2009 be glorious & memorable for all the right reasons!

Good Luck comrades & God Speed !
