Unit Title: Percents Grade Level: 5

th

Standards:
5.II.A.3: Recognize equivalent common fractions,
decimals and percents

5.II.B.7: Interpret percents as a part of a hundred

Preassessment lesson strategy:
Journal: Where have seen percentages
used in everyday? (Ex.
Clothing/Product sales, sporting
statistics)
Critical question for this portion of the unit:
How are different percentages calculated?
Personal questions:
Students write down personal
questions as they arise.

Content:
Percentages
Skills: (What will students do?)
Students will understand percent as
part of a hundred.

Students will be able calculate simple
percentage problems.

Instructional phases:
Activate:
(Creating focus and purpose, sharing standards and essential questions, opening mental files)

Watch Khan Academy video clip: Describing the Meaning of Percent
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/decimals/percent_tutorial/v/describing-
the-meaning-of-percent

Acquire: (Getting new knowledge and skills)

Text read: A percent is a ratio that indicates a certain number of parts for every 100
parts. A percent indicates a fraction with a denominator of 100; for example 12% =
12/100 or 0.12.

Percent Handout

Apply, practice, formative assessment: (Demonstrating the learning)

Cube activity:
There are 100 cubes in each cup. Some of the cubes are red, some blue, some green,
some orange, and some yellow. Count the cubes in the cup (to make sure you in fact have
100) and use the information to fill in the chart below:

Color # of cubes Percent Decimal Fraction
Red 17 17% .17 17/100
Blue
Green
Orange
Yellow
Total

Graph activity: (Need graph paper and colored pencils)
Use the graph paper to make 3 squares that are 10 x 10. Use your imagination and the
information in this chart to color the squares to make 3 unique and creative designs. We
will vote on the most creative design. Winner gets a prize!

Square Color 1 Color 2 Color 3
1 42% 28% 30%
2 16% 47% 37%
3 25% 40% 35%

Extension:
So far, we have dealt with the meaning of percent only in terms of exactly 100 objects.
That is, if you have 100 cubes and 30% are red, how many are red? 30

Suppose you have 20 cubes and 30% are red and the rest are yellow. How would you find
the number of red and the number of yellow? You will need to use equivalent ratios or
equivalent fractions to figure this out.

x:20 = 30:100 or x = 30_ Then think, That can I multiply 20 by in order to get 100?
20 100 or What is 100 divided by 20?

x= 5 so there are 5 red cubes

Another way to look at it:
15% of the number of people who attended a concert arrived late. If 30 people arrived
late, find the number of people who attended the concert.

From the above model, we see that
15% ! 30 people
1% ! 30 15 = 2 people
100% ! 100 ! 2 = 200 people
200 people attended the concert.
