Common Core/ NM Content Standards: Craft and Structure RI.9-10.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative and technical meanings, analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choice on meaning and tone. Literacy W.9-10.2 Write texts to examine and convey complex ideas.

Essential Question(s): What is the meaning of Pathos, Logos and Ethos? How do these concepts relate to advertising? What are advertising names for rhetorical strategies that are used to persuade? Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.):

Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students have studied the definitions of Ethos, Pathos and Logos. They have identified statements as one of the three Rhetorical devices, evaluated ads and concluded the main type of Rhetorical device the ad is using, and they have written a persuasive email using all three rhetorical devices. Resources/Materials News Articles on the founder of modern advertising. Worksheets with questions that check for understanding and require analysis and evaluation. Ads (both video and print)

Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes?) Daily: Do Now checks for understanding of the previous days lesson. Students will also determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text by using academic vocabulary words in the proper context.

Students will read a short bio on Edward Bernays, one of the founders of public relations, and answer questions that require the ability to infer information, find main ideas and creatively apply ideas (writing headlines, designing an ad).

Assignment(s) DueFinish up Bernays Reading and Questions Complete the design of an ad using Bernays appeal to subconscious longings/needs/fears. Assignment(s) DueAn assignment given last week is now due: an analysis of a print ad to determine the main type of rhetorical device being used in the ad. THURSDAY Learning TargetStudents will demonstrate an understanding of the target market by finding clues in an ad that show the target market and then creating a character sketch of a person representing the target market. Students will then analyze the ad to see if it effectively uses Bernays strategy of meeting a subconscious longing of the target market. FRIDAY Learning TargetStudents will demonstrate ability to analyze an ad by presenting their analysis of an ad to the class. Evaluate TV ads to see if they are using Bernays logic of meeting some subconscious need effectively and show this understanding in a class discussion and by filling writing down their ideas.

Assignment(s) DueStudents choose an ad to analyze. They must describe the characteristics of the target market, and cite evidence from the ad to support their claims. Students must then analyze the ad to see if it effectively appeals to the longings/needs/fears of the target audience.
