2 Mbps Pulse Harmonic Modulation Based Transceiver for Implantable Medical Devices

Wilson A N 133079001

Introduction
Transcutaneous data telemetry is used in a group of IMDs. Need to transfer large amount of data from external artificial sensors to IMDs. Limited to space and power. Require high bandwidth at lowest carrier frequency. Near field inductive coupling is used. Usual modulation techniques are insufficient. Pulse Harmonic Modulation(PHM) used to achieve near-field wideband transmission.

Pulse Harmonic Modulation

Need to minimize ISI and reduce BER. For every digital bit 1 a initiation and suppression pulse is generated. For every digital bit 0 no pulse is generated. Amplitude of second oscillation is same as the first. There is 180 degree phase difference. Reduces ISI by cancelling both oscillations. Also minimizes BER.

Conclusion
Achieved 10.2Mbps data rate in high Q inductive links. Increased SNR, transmission range. Improved selectivity and minimizes ISI. BER=6.3*10-8 across 10mm inductive link. Very good performance at low and 67.5MHz frequency.

Question

How is ISI reduced in Pulse Harmonic Modulation?
