Integer Word Problems

Balloons and bricks are attached to a hot air balloon. The balloons make the hot air balloon go upward and the bricks make the hot air balloon go downward. The hot air balloon starts at 100m and then the balloons and bricks are attached. At what altitude will the hot air balloon come to rest?

You start at 100m, Where do you end up?

22 balloons with a change of 9m each 11 balloons with a change of 17m each

12 bricks with a change of -3m each

10 bricks with a change of -5m each

Algebra
Simplifying
Remember: You cant add a variable (x) with a number that does not have a variable Example: 5x + 2 + 4x + 7 3x 9 + 12 + 11x
What does it equal?

Simplifying Algebra
1. 5(x + 2) + 3(4x) 9 2. 6(x 3) 2(x) + 17 3. 10(2 + x) + 4(x 6) 4. 5 + 7(x + 2) 3 -4(x + 20)

Algebra
Remember: 1. What you do on one side of the equal (=) symbol, you must do on the other side 2. What ever is outside the bracket you must multiply what is inside the bracket. Example: 4(x 4) = 2(x 2) Step 1: Multiply number outside of bracket with what is inside the bracket. 4x 16 = 2x 4 Step 2: Get Rid of the number on the left side of equal (=) symbol 4x 16 = 2x 4 +16 +16 4x = 2x + 12 Step 3: Get rid of number with variable (x) on right side of equal (=) symbol 4x = 2x + 12 -2x -2x 2x = 12 Step 4: Divide variable (x) on left side by itself, and do to other side 2x = 12 2 2 x=6

2. A(6, 4) B(3, 5)
3. A(7, 3) B(-5, 1)

Cartesian Planes
The first number is the x coordinate and the second number is the y coordinate Example: (4, 6) = (x, y) 1st quadrant (+, +) 2nd quadrant (-, +) 3rd quadrant (-, -) 4th quadrant (+, -)

Y axis (vertical) X axis (horizontal)

Percent in Words
There are 999 students at DArcy McGee. 666 of them are girls. What percentage of the student population are boys?

Percent in Words
First figure out what the percentage is of girls at DArcy.
Divide () number of girls by total students 666 999 = 0.666 which is 0.67 Change the decimal into percent 0.67 100 = 67% Take total percent of students away from girl percentage. 100% - 67% = 33% Answer the question 33% is the amount of boys that attend DArcy.

Circles
Radius A line that starts at the edge of the circle and goes to the middle. Radius times () 2 = diameter

Diameter A line that starts at the edge of a circle and goes across to the other side of the circle, passing through the middle. Diameter 2 = Radius

Radius and Diameter

Find Diameter 1. r = 2.2cm 2. r = 9.45m

3. r = 6.66cm

Find the Radius 2. d = 8.8m 3. d = 4.52cm

4. d = 180.2m
