EMH332 APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS ASSIGNMENT 2

1. The inlet conditions to an Otto cycle are 100kPa and 37oC. The pressures at the end of compression and combustion are 2.5MPa and 7.5MPa, respectively. Determine: (a) Compression ratio, r (b) the clearance (c) thermal efficiency 2. An 8-cylinder, 9.5cm x 8cm, 4-stroke, automotive petrol engine running at 3000rpm has volumetric efficiency of 75% and air-fuel ratio of 16. If the inlet condition is 100kPa and 30oC. Calculate the fuel consumption used. 3. A four cylinder 3-Liter diesel engine that operates on an ideal diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 17 and a cutoff ratio of 2.2. Air is at 27oC and 97kPa at the beginning of the compression process. Accounting for the variation of specific heats with temperature, determine how much power the engine will deliver at 1500 rpm, compare and discuss the result with constant specific heats for air. 4. An diesel engine receives 0.6kg/s of air at 100kPa and 60oC. The temperature at the end of compression process is 850K and the cut of ratio of 2. The relative efficiency respect to power is 65%. The calorific value of the fuel is 44MJ/kg. Determine (a) thermal efficiency (b) brake power (c) specific break fuel consumption. 5. A two stage air compressor consists of three cylinders having the same bore and stroke. The delivery pressure is 707kPa and the FAD is 4.2m3/min. Air is drawn in at 101kPa, 15oC and intercooler cools the air to 38oC. The index of compression is 1.3 for all three cylinders. Neglecting clearance, calculate: (i) the intermediate pressure (ii) the power required to drive the compressor (iii) the isothermal efficiency
