The colours of the school crest are those of the Coat of Arms of Sir Stamford Raffles: Green, White and Black. The open book symbolises knowledge and the burning torch our commitment to forge character and develop lifeskills. The schools motto, Filiae Melioris Aevi, emblazoned across the crest, is Latin for Daughters of a Better Age. It is our pledge to the community that girls who pass through the portals of RGS will not simply inherit a ne tradition but will actively forge a ner future for her community.

At RGS, students journey beyond traditional boundaries in their pursuit of knowledge. Providing holistic education through a challenging, broad-based academic curriculum helps our students develop analytical thinking skills and an appreciation for lifelong learning. Our distinctive Raffles Programme (RP) stretches and nurtures the high ability girl. By by-passing the GCE O Level examinations, she has more time to develop holistically and pursue different areas of interest. A distinctive feature of the RP is The Rafes Academy. The Rafes Academy serves as the talent development platform of the RP to nurture highly able students in the academic domain. The Rafes Diploma (RD) is a certication that recognises student participation and achievements in a wide spectrum of programmes in all the ve domains of development. This certication celebrates the commitment of students who take up opportunities which nurture their talents in areas beyond the academic and acknowledges the peaks of excellence attained by the student. In this way, the RD aims to challenge and expand the traditional denition of success based on the GCE A Level certication. Cognisant of the impact of ICT in pedagogy, integration of ICT with teaching and learning prepares the RGS girl with 21st century lifeskills for a digital world.

The Rafes Programme

The Rafes Programme offers a seamless curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6 (Years 1-4 in RGS, Years 5-6 in Raffles Institution), culminating in the Singapore-Cambridge General Certicate in Education (GCE) Advanced Level Examination. Its mission is to nurture the best and brightest into men and women of scholarship, who will be leaders of distinction and committed to excellence, spirit of enterprise, and service for the common good in the interest of the nation. Through the programme, we want to nurture the next generation of thinkers, leaders and pioneers. The Rafes Programme specically caters to highly capable students who are the top 3% of their cohort. It provides a holistic education through a challenging academic curriculum that is broad-based, and which will develop analytical thinking skills and an appreciation for lifelong learning. The nonacademic curriculum emphasises the cultivation of lifeskills such as resilience, teamwork, problem-solving and decisionmaking. Based on the principles of the Integrated Curriculum Model (Van Tassel-Baska, 1986) that was developed for high ability learners, the key elements of the curriculum include advanced content knowledge, higher order process and product work, and cross-disciplinary concept development.
Rafes Programme students will also benet from: Multiple options for research and independent learning, with opportunities for mentorship, research studies, industrial attachments and options for service learning and aesthetic development Character and Leadership Education, where the cultivation of personal effectiveness, national consciousness and the development of leadership qualities and competencies, are undertaken in an explicit way through the programmes designed The Raffles Philosophy course that aims to nurture a community of inquirers with strong empathy and wellhoned reasoning and skills in intellectual discourse.
The Rafes Academy provides a unique environment, in both physical and intellectual terms, for the scholarly pursuit at the highest possible level in each of these disciplines. Students attend pull-out classes for up to a maximum of two subject areas from Years 3-6, (Years 5-6 in Rafes Institution) where they are given the opportunity to accelerate and advance their learning. Special programmes in the Raffles Academy include the following: Advanced and enriched option modules enabling students to pursue their areas of passion at a higher level of rigour and depth and to explore and cultivate other areas of interest Internship/Mentorship with academics from tertiary institutions and leading practitioners from industries Overseas attachment and collaboration opportunities, and participation at international platforms and forums. To qualify for the Rafes Academy, students must obtain a strong overall Grade Point Average as well as an outstanding Grade Point for the subject they want to apply for.

The Rafes Academy is RGS talent development component for specialised areas of learning in the Humanities, Mathematics, Science and Technology, and the Arts. It caters to students with special gifts, talents and passions in specic disciplines with the aim to nurture their pioneering spirit, innovative disposition and develop their distinct abilities.

The Rafes Diploma
The Rafes Diploma (RD) is a certication that recognises student participation and achievements in ve development domains: Cognitive, Character and Leadership, Community and Citizenship, Arts and Aesthetics, as well as Sports and Health. The RD is a testament to the holistic educational experience that the Rafes Programme aims to provide for each student, developing her as a Person who is a Thinker, Leader and Pioneer. The RD is criterion-referenced and is awarded on a tiered basis - Raffles Diploma, Raffles Diploma with Merit and Raffles Diploma with Distinction. Upon meeting the base criteria across all ve development domains, Rafesians are automatically awarded the RD, with exceptional students obtaining a Merit or Distinction in a particular domain. For the Merit award, submission of a short reflection essay is required to ascertain students quality of experience within the domain(s). For the Distinction award, students are required to submit a written statement of his/her interest, involvement and reections in the respective domain(s). RD Distinction is awarded upon recommendation by a Select Committee.
2011 GCE A Level Results

The fth cohort of students of the Rafes Programme gave a strong showing in the GCE A Level examination. 62 of our students (or 13.5% of the RGS candidates) achieved distinctions in all their subjects, whilst 113 (or 24.6% of the RGS candidates) achieved seven or more distinctions. 160 of our students (or 34.9% of the RGS candidates) achieved a perfect university admission score. There were other stellar academic performances. Two out of the three 2011 Top GCE A Level Chinese Students were RGS students Khoo Jia Hui and Zhang Mengshi who, together with Tiffany Seah were among the six top RI students with 13 Units or 9 Distinctions. One of the two RI students awarded the Institute of Physics Medal was RGS student Yuen Wing Yan. Based on the GCE A Level results, RI identied Cherie Gan, a National Golfer with 7 Distinctions, one of the two 2011 Outstanding Athletes. RI also recognised Soh Ser Yee, who won 1st prize at the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition 2010 and scored 6 Distinctions, as one of the two 2011 Outstanding Artistes. Year 2 students toured the Singapore Arts Museum as part of their General Art module and Year 3 students visited the Science Art Museum for the Andy Warhol and the Harry Potter exhibitions. Pioneering the Arts With the objective of providing a platform for RGS students to contribute and reach out to the community, and for leadership and authentic learning for students in the Arts arena, three main events were held this year: The 3rd RGS Lam Soon Cooking Competition Naturel Living with Wholegrains for secondary school students, and the 2nd RGS Piano competition organised by Year 3 Elective Programme students and sponsored by Steinway and Sons, Singapore. The Music Elective Programme (MEP) A piano master class by Dr Ken Hamilton of the University of Birmingham was organised in April. In August, the Year 3 MEP students organised the 2nd RGS Piano Competition. The competition included a new category solely for Rafes students. Winners will perform with MEP students in the 2012 MEP concert. The entire MEP cohort also attended Wicked the musical and the Year 3 students attended an enrichment camp in June.
Enrichment and Special Programmes

Aesthetics
The aesthetics programme in RGS cultivates in students a critical awareness and appreciation of art in varied contexts, basic technical skills and essential lifeskills. Supporting the Nation This year, the Art and Music department staff organised level-wide activities in support of the Nations vision of Arts Education. Year 1 students went on a learning journey in March to the local dragon kiln for ceramics art appreciation. They also attended an integrated music cum drama concert

Our alumus Li Churen (406 11) nished First in the Senior Category of the National Arts Council National Violin and Piano Competition 2011. Year 4 students See Ning Hui and Jessica Tan of the Raffles Academy class came in first and second respectively for the 2012 Steinway Piano Competition. The RGS Special Art Programme (SAP) In April, all SAP students visited the Pixar Animation exhibition at the Science Centre; the Year 3 students visited the Classic Contemporary Exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM); the Year 2 students attended an exhibition and workshop on Singapore artist, Ming Wong; and the Year 1 students visited the Panaroma, Recent Art from Contemporary Asia at SAM. Year 2 and 3 students were also invited by RI to join the school for their biennial trip to New York in June allowing the students to view and study masterpieces from western Art history. In March this year, the SAP Year 2 students exhibited their works at the Esplanade as part of the Esplanade Values Inspired Project organised nationwide in schools. A post New York Art trip public exhibition presented by the SAP Year 2 and 3 students in collaboration with students from Rafes Institution took place in July August.
Home Economics Two students from the Year 3 Food Science Research Studies cluster participated in the inaugural iChef Cooking Competition organised by Republic Polytechnic and clinched 3rd prize. A group of Year 2 girls emerged champions in the Rainbow Ice Cream Making Competition.
RGS Performing and Visual Arts

RGS Performing Arts CCAs are key vehicles in our holistic education plan. These CCAs seek to drive home the key understanding of the cultural, historical and social signicance of performing arts and how these contribute to the overall development of aesthetic sensibilities. The larger goal of these CCAs is to cultivate culturally appreciative citizens who will play a role in fostering a gracious society. There are currently 13 Performing Arts CCAs in RGS falling broadly into four groups: Instrumental Music, Non-Instrumental Music, Drama and Dance. In 2012, our Performing Arts CCAs proudly presented an array of full-staged concerts and performances. The Chinese Orchestra, Rafes Strings (Strings Ensemble), Guitar Ensemble, Dance International and Band Symphonic captivated

the audience with their rhapsodic music, in addition to contributing part of the proceeds collected at these concerts to various charitable organisations including the Admiralty Care Corner, Youth for Causes groups and Mercy Relief Singapore. The RGS Angklung Ensemble partnered with the Care Corner Student Care Centre (Admiralty), where the girls taught the children from the centre the basics of Angklung. The English Drama Club put up an entertaining mid-year production titled Where the bus stops, while the Chinese Drama enthralled the audience with their performances during the Mother Tongue Week celebrations. The Indian Orchestra was invited to both perform and conduct student workshops during the SYF 2012 Show and Tell, delighting their Primary School visitors with the opportunity to play and enjoy Indian Music. The Angklung Ensemble, Indian Orchestra and Chinese Orchestra, at the invitation of Ministry of Education (MOE), worked together to put up a unique fusion item at the TIMSS/PIRLS National Research Co-ordinators dinner for International Delegates hosted by the Director-General of Education. Their item was well-received by the delegates. The RGS Symphonic Band also took part in the Singapore International Band Festival, obtaining a respectable Silver award (Division 1), competing against other bands from
an older age group. In November 2011, the RGS Choir competed in and emerged as Laureate of the Festival at the 21st International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music in Prague, Czech Republic. These invitations and awards bear testimony to the skills of RGS CCA groups, their passion for the performing arts and their dedication to serving the community.
English Language and Literature

The English Language and Literature department is guided by the passionate belief that the richness and vibrancy of the English Language are to be celebrated and lived. The department apart from crafting a rigorous curriculum to achieve these desired outcomes also provides a wide range of platforms, both local and international, for our students to benchmark the quality of their works. The department received resounding afrmation of this commitment with a bumper crop of 41 Commonwealth Essay Competition winners, 7 Torrance Legacy Creative Writing Awards winners, and 2 Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award winners. In addition, Zhou Hui Wen (401 11) and Tiffany Ow (410 11) had their poems published in Singapores rst Moving Words project Poems in the Train.
In line with the departments vision that language be used for advocacy in service to the community, three Year 3 students, Tan Li Xian Amy (304), Cheryl Tan Wenn Min (309) and Syaqah Nabilah (304), have been selected to sit in the inaugural READ!Singapore Book Selection Committee 2013. These girls will be part of a team responsible for selecting stories that cater to the 7 15 year old age group and presenting the titles for approval to the READ!Singapore steering committee. Our Year 2 and Year 3 students will also be continuing with their participation in the annual GEB Literature Seminar this year. One of the highlights of the year was our inaugural Renaissance Faire. This event marked the culmination of the Year 2 Shakespeare module. The students had the opportunity to apply their understanding of Elizabethan culture and history by creating, setting up and participating in a Summer Faire. We also celebrated literary days like World Book Day through RAWR, Really Arty Week at Rafes, spearheaded by the departments writing club, INKspiration. RAWR ended with an exciting movies-under-the-stars community movie screening. Together with the Humanities department, the department co-organised the Geography-Literature Overseas Fieldtrip to England in November 2011 for 30 Geography and Literature
students. Included in the enriching and educational itinerary, was an unforgettable visit to the Olympic Village under construction.
Humanities
The Department seeks to nurture the RGS girl to be an advocate and reflective thinker who will be a steward of humanity and the environment. Multifarious platforms and learning opportunities including local and overseas eldtrips are created for this purpose, bringing learning beyond the curriculum and classroom. Geography Overseas study eldtrips to the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Malaysia and local learning eldtrips to Marina Barrage, Dairy Farm Quarry, Sungel Buloh Wetland Reserve keep the subject current and relevant. In encouraging the students to pursue their passions and experience real-life application of geography, the students participated in many national competitions. These included the National Climate Change Competition 2011 where RGS clinched 2nd Prize for the Secondary school category. In the Planning A Green & Clean Township - Singapore Youth

Leaders for A Sustainable Future Competition 2012 - RGS emerged champions in their category. In the NUS Geography Challenge 2012, a competition which aims to demonstrate the relevance, dynamism and diversity of Geography as an academic subject, RGS emerged 3rd runner-up, beating a total of 91 participating secondary schools. In the Journey of Possibilities Ideas competition for the Rail Corridor competition, the RGS teams clinched the 1st and 3rd prizes, and were given honorary mentions for two other projects in the Youth Challenge competition. In the Heartland Youthoria! Competition, RGS emerged 2 nd among the schools in the South zone. The competition was part of the Housing and Development Boards inaugural Youth Carnival event to raise teenagers awareness of community bonding in the heartlands. History The two-week eldtrip to Paris (France) and Berlin (Germany) for the upper level students held during the mid-year holidays encouraged the students to make explicit connections between their classroom experiences and the immediate environment. Fieldtrips were also organised for the lower level students. One such trip was to the battleeld sites in Singapore where a seamless connection between the goals of the curriculum and Citizenship Education was made. Activities were crafted to allow students to learn collaboratively through the coconstruction of knowledge during museum visits. In addition
to fieldtrips, distinguished speakers were also brought in to share their expertise with our students, and to give our students a chance to interact with these scholars. Emphasis was also placed on the design of an ICT-enriched curriculum especially for Year 1 students pioneering RGS 1:1. Social Studies In providing quality teaching and learning, the Social Studies teachers initiated an innovative method of formative assessment using online collaborative platforms such as Googledocs. This enabled formative assessments to take on a collaborative learning atmosphere with two-way communication between teachers and students. To facilitate greater nuanced expression of conceptual understanding, the team leveraged on multimedia technology in formulating performance tasks where students had to make use of visual and audio media technology to present an advocacy piece concerning Singapore. Leveraging on lessons from previous years, the team formulated a learning journey that helped students learn affectively about Singapores relevance in a globalised world, using understandings gleaned from Social Studies, History, and Geography. In catering to varied and diverse interests of students, the team also sent students on various conferences in 2011/12 such as the World Scholars Cup, Rafes Model UN Conference, International Model UN Conference and the SCGS Model UN conference, allowing
students to apply what they learnt in class in the context of international diplomacy. Regional Studies Thirty Year 1 students were enrolled in the Regional Studies Progamme (RSP) in 2012. This number is the largest we have had in the past three years. RGS will continue to offer broad and diverse enrichment activities including overseas immersion programmes to Malaysia, Bali and Central Java and many local enrichment activities. Some key initiatives for 2012 included a workshop on Southeast Asian Art by Dr Sian E Jay (Oxford-educated anthropologist, writer, researcher and educator) for the Year 4 students and collaboration with SMP Karangturi in Semarang which gave the Year 4 students an opportunity to interact with their Indonesian counterparts during their visit to Central Java in May 2012. Areas Studies Area Studies students were offered opportunities to participate in the RSP overseas immersion programmes. In addition, 14 students from the Area Studies programme and RSP took part in the ASEAN Youth Convention held from 16-20 June 2012 where they engaged with their peers from other schools to discuss ASEANs role in the world and other security and economic issues.
Mathematics
The department provides students with a myriad of opportunities to enrich their understanding and appreciation of the discipline. Students are encouraged to acquire mathematical knowledge and skills that extend beyond the scope of regular curricula. The department also seeks to serve the community by sharing practices with other schools and providing students with the opportunities to organise events which in turn enhances their learning. 2nd Singapore Mathematical Modeling Forum & Challenge (SMMFC) 2012 Building on the success of the last years programme, this years SMMFC was expanded to include partner schools from overseas. Held on 27 - 30 June, the SMMFC was jointly organised by Rafes Girls School and Ngee Ann Secondary School, and sponsored by Texas Instruments. A total of 139 students and 30 teachers from Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong and Indonesia took part in this years challenge. The four-day event provided students with the opportunity to translate real-world problems into mathematical problems and solve them using mathematical models. SMMFC included a visit to Universal Studios Singapore for the participants to gather data, analyse and interpret the information gathered, and communicate the ndings via mathematical models. The

nal challenge was held on 30 June. Singapore National Girls Mathematics Competition (SNGMC) The SNGMC was organised by RGS students for primary school students. Held with the objective of providing RGS students with service-learning opportunities, our students were able to explore areas of service as well as their knowledge in Mathematics to prepare a competition for primary school students. Held concurrently with the SNGMC was a teachers workshop. About 50 teachers from 50 different primary schools attended the sharing session conducted by RGS teachers. The primary school teachers were introduced to the fundamentals of mathematical modeling and given opportunities to solve real-time problems using mathematical models. Through this workshop, the teachers were able to identify and solve common problems in teaching and learning in a collaborative manner. The sharing also helped to establish networks among mathematics departments in primary schools. Statistical Poster Competition 2012 RGS swept 3 out of 5 prizes in the secondary school category at the 2012 Singapore Statistical Poster Competition. A statistics poster is a display that uses graphs to summarise data,
present different points of view and answer questions about the data. The 2012 Singapore Statistical Poster Competition was organised by the National University of Singapore. The results highlight the ability of our students to apply their mathematical skills beyond the classroom environment.
Languages
The Languages Department provides several platforms and opportunities to nurture our students to be active learners and procient users of the Mother Tongue Languages. To create an immersive environment for the learning and appreciation of Mother Tongue Languages, the department organised programmes and activities for the Mother Tongue Fortnight in July 2012. Programme highlights included performances by the Chinese Drama students, a Karaoke competition, Malay handicraft exhibitions and an amazing race infused with Indian cultural components. The students also put up an exhibition showcasing information on Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures that allowed students to understand and relate culture to language in the different ethnic groups. The department continued its collaboration with the Singapore Literature Society in organising the National Secondary
School Chinese Literature Camp on 14 July 2012 with the objective of inculcating among our local Secondary School students an interest in Chinese Language and Literature. The theme of the camp this year was (Dream of the Red Chamber). On the Tamil front, the Tamil Language teacher and students organised the Biennial Inter School Tamil Literary competition for primary schools (Kalautsavam) from March to April 2012. The aim of Kalautsavam is to provide a platform for primary school students to display and enhance their creative and analytical thinking through oratorical and writing skills. The series of competitions attracted a total of twenty-ve schools. This year, the department also organised its first Malay Literary Camp on 14 July. It was a joint effort with the theater group Teater Artistik. The main objectives of the camp were to enrich the students appreciation of literary work, and to establish the interaction and collaboration among the students and teachers. The event also gave our students the opportunity to hone their skills in organising and hosting events.
Philosophy
The Philosophy Enrichment Programme (PEP) began with the objective of providing an enriched curriculum for the Year 2 to 4 students who have shown passion and aptitude for Philosophy. There are 43 Year 2 students, 33 Year 3 students and 13 Year 4 students in PEP this year. The PEP teachers conduct weekly sessions, providing students with the opportunity to explore philosophical issues beyond those discussed in the regular curriculum. The modules offered are Logic, Ancient Greek Philosophy, Continental Philosophy and Bioethics. Each year, a number of PEP students are invited to participate in the annual Raffles Institution Inter-school Philosophy Dialogue. This year, 14 PEP students from different levels took part in this event. Three of our students, Chow Huiru (301), Ho Choy Ying Freya (303) and Lai Yan (303), received the Best Inquirer Award. In addition, a group of PEP students, under the mentorship of our teachers, started a Service Learning Project to introduce Philosophy for Children to students in CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel Primary School. This group of students designed a learning package and conducted termly Philosophy lessons

as a form of enrichment for a group of Primary 5 students. These lessons aim to develop the students thinking and interpersonal skills, as well as their competencies in the English Language through the Community of Inquiry. This project also gives our PEP students an opportunity to apply what they have learnt in class in an authentic context. set by a Mentoring Competency check list. In November 2011, eleven students represented RGS in the Individualised Research Exhibition cum Presentation in two categories, Poster design and Oral presentation. The teams received a Commendation award for their posters, while the project group from the Childrens Book Cluster clinched a Gold award for their oral presentation of their project, Different Books for Different Children, in which the team created reading material that would meet the special learning needs of dyslexic children. This year, the department welcomes its new Head of Department, Talent Development, Ms Koh Chen Chen to the team. In closing 2012, the department will be organising a Research Showcase, where some of the best research projects in RGS will be showcased in an exhibition, to expose our girls to the variety of research across various disciplines, and fuel in them a passion for research.
Research Studies
The Research Studies (RS) departments main role is to deliver the RS curriculum to Year 1 to 3 students, and provide guidance to RS teacher-mentors, who mentor school-based RS student teams. RS student teams, comprising 3-4 students, embark on 2 projects: one at Year 2 and another at Years 3 and 4. In order to achieve its goal this year of increasing the standard of school-based research projects, the RS department recognised the importance of increasing the competency level of its mentors as a means to that end. The department continues to monitor Research Studies consultation sessions a weekly project discussion of project groups and teacher mentor, and department members give feedback to teacher mentors during a pre-observation and post-observation meeting in reference to research project mentoring standards
Science
A range of enrichment platforms and activities is available for students driven to pursue their interest in the sciences. Among the highlights this year is the STAR Lecture, featuring The
Royal Institute Christmas Lectures from the United Kingdom. A total of 80 students and teachers from RGS attended the lecture held at the Science Centre, Singapore. During the June holiday, 70 students participated in eld trips to Wales and Tioman. Closer to home, learning journeys to the Marina Barrage, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Lower Pierce Reservoir and the RGS Wallace Environmental Learning Laboratory presented our students with opportunities for interdisciplinary studies and the applications of science in the real world. On the competition front, students were challenged to apply their scientific knowledge, reasoning and communication skills and creativity to solving topical issues in various competitions. Competitions that the students participated in included the Singapore Biomedical Olympiad 2012 where RGS achieved 10 Gold Awards, 10 Silver Awards and 4 Bronze Awards, an improvement over 2011s results. Two Year 2 teams participated in the Creative & Heuristic Application of Science competition, bringing home the championship as well as a commendation award. In the Sembcorp Water Technology Prize, RA Physics students Cheng Hang, Grace Sum, Hu Fangfang and Wen Xingyue, all from 401, achieved 3rd placing.
Deserving of special mention is the outstanding achievement by Liu Ziwei (40111), who received the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Award for Mathematics and Science. In addition, two RGS alumni, Zhang Hui Ting (41510) and Mao Haitong (41010) achieved gold medals at this years 23rd International Biology Olympiad hosted in Singapore. Another RGS alumnus, Low Kay Yi (41010) achieved a Gold award at this years Singapore Science and Engineering Fair, and went on to represent Singapore at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in the USA, winning 3 rd prize for her project in the Medicine and Health Sciences category. Launch of the F1 Centre for Innovation Set up to promote student learning and engagement, particularly amongst female students, in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), RGS F1 Centre for Innovation will serve as a hub for schools to collaborate and explore new ways of providing students with the skills and competencies in STEM education through an integrated curriculum with meaningful real-world applications. Graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mrs Ng Ai Lin, Zonal Director, School South, Ministry of Education, the RGS F1 Centre for Innovation was launch on 28 July 2012, the rst F1 Centre for innovation set up by a girls school. The

centre is critical in providing the infrastructure for the entire F1 in Schools Programme. Going beyond the Programme, schools can also innovate and use the technology available at the Centre for Innovation to conduct research and the analysis of materials to extend the use of the centre in other disciplines. The launch of the RGS F1 Centre for Innovation also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between RGS and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES). With the MOU, RGS and IES will work in collaboration, through programmes offered by the RGS F1 Centre of Innovation, to change students perception of science, engineering and technology, and to promote engineering education and careers, especially among girls. The partnership will facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge and the appreciation of the art of science and engineering from industry professionals to students, and create greater networking opportunities between schools, local and overseas engineering bodies and organisations. departments to identify the ICT skills and knowledge required of the students in the different subjects. Training workshops are then designed and conducted on a sign-up basis for the students. Workshops conducted include Cyber wellness, video editing, podcast, Photoshop and Dreamweaver. To accommodate the increase usage of ICT, the schools data bandwidth was upgraded and wireless network access expanded campus wide. In tandem with the provision of ICT infrastructure and services, RGS 1:1 was launched in 2012, with all Year 1 students using an Apple MacBook as a device for collaboration, sharing, communication and learning. Face-to-face interaction will however remain a cornerstone of teaching and learning in RGS. Our teachers will inject variety in their lessons so that our students strike a good balance between using the device and interacting with their classmates. RGS 1:1 aims to produce active, critical and responsible digital citizens who are able to participate in learning communities within and beyond the school. By 2015, all RGS students will be learning and working in a 1:1 computing environment. The staggered rollout is to ensure smooth implementation as well as capacity building. RGS takes a holistic approach to character and leadership education by integrating the cognitive, affective and social aspects of education. Students are provided with opportunities to understand and practise good character and leadership, strengthening the competencies and attitudes of a good steward of self, a socially responsible and active citizen, and an ethical and caring leader. The Character and Leadership Education framework provides a range of learning platforms which aim to build character, develop personal effectiveness and leadership qualities as well as cultivate national consciousness and service to the community and nation. Students The Uniformed Groups (UGs) organised Total Defence Day activities to create more awareness and a better understanding of the importance to UGs to Total Defence. Citizenship Education
The RGS Citizenship Education (CE) is instrumental in instilling a sense of national rootedness and noblesse oblige in Rafesians. Key areas for 2012 include: providing more opportunities to empower students to contribute to the community

opportunity for the student-leaders to gather insights from, and exchange views and opinions on inter-racial and interreligious issues in Singapore with politicians, academics, practitioners and community leaders. Partners RGS endeavours to engage her partners in NE activities seeking out meaningful platforms and opportunities for our students to engage in service learning and social advocacy. This year, parents participated actively in the RGS Racial Harmony Week by providing childhood snacks and games from yester-year for students to develop an understanding of what their parents childhood was like. PRGS Association also invited parents to join our National Day Celebrations. Rafes Public Policy Dialogue The Rafes Public Policy Dialogue was organised for upper level students as part of the schools CE programme. Hosted by the RGS Global Affairs Council (GAC), Rafes Public Policy Dialogue sought to enhance students awareness of public policies from multiple perspectives by inviting guest speakers from the relevant areas. This years session saw Mr Shivakumar Nair from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Tim Huxley, Executive Director of The International Institute for Strategic Studies Asia and A/P Alan Chong Chia Siong from S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, presenting views on the
changing nature of Singapores international relations. In-Conversation Series The annual In-Conversation series is organised for upper level students as part of the schools CE programme. Hosted by student volunteers, the In-Conversation series seeks to enhance students awareness on social issues. Topics discussed this year included the theme of graciousness and discrimination. Invited speakers for the sessions included Dr Tan Cheng Bock (former Member of Parliament), Dr William Wan (Singapore Kindness Movement), Ms Denise Phua Lay Peng (Memebr of Parliament, Moulmein-Kallang GRC) and Dr Eugene Tan (Nominated Member of Parliament).
RGS Leadership Boards

RGS has a long tradition of producing leaders of distinction through platforms such as the Prefectorial Board, Peer Support Board, Student Congress and House Committees. Established in 1950, the RGS Prefectorial Board is recognised as the pinnacle of leadership in the school. As custodians of school culture, one of the fundamental roles of prefects is to inculcate the schools values in their peers through valuesbased discipline and informed decision making. This year,
the Board was involved in the mentorship of Year 1 Class Chairpersons through a session on leadership development. The RGS Peer Support Board serves as a cohesive agent in fostering a sense of community and belonging within the school. They also provide guidance and engender the Year 1 pupils with the necessary skills to cope with the transition from Primary to Secondary school life. The Board is also involved in the planning and organising of many school-wide projects such as the Singapore Kindness Movement. Student Congress empowers students to identify and act on issues pertinent to their school experience. This year, the board focused on the broad areas of teaching and learning, recognition and opportunities, and the learning environment. Through focus group sessions, school-wide forum discussions and publicity events, Congress has actively encouraged students to contribute their feedback, working with the school management to implement feasible solutions, leading the way to effecting positive change. Leadership in the RGS House committee members is developed through the organisation of the various InterHouse Games which involve the entire school population. These activities allow the leaders in the five houses Tarbet, Buckle, Richardson, Waddle and Hadley the opportunities
to cultivate a strong sense of belonging to their respective house through friendly competitions which in turn promotes school spirit.
RGS-ICYL
Since its inception in 2006, this biennial event serves to nurture young women leaders. RGS-ICYL (International Convention for Youth Leaders) 2012s theme is Connecting Hearts, Inspiring Action. The theme underscores two main ideas that drive this years convention: discovering and sharing ones personal values and sense of purpose in stepping up as a leader enacting collective action towards positive change We hope to bring together youth leaders from diverse backgrounds to share leadership insights, challenges and experiences, thus enabling participants to discover and strengthen their purpose in leadership. With collective wisdom gained from the convention, we hope that participants will be inspired to create a positive change.

Service-Learning
Service-Learning (S-L) at RGS seeks to nurture every RGS student to be a socially responsible and active citizen by providing opportunities for meaningful community service. Through S-L, RGS students actively create positive impact in the local community and grow to become independent and compassionate learners. One noteworthy RGS collaboration with the community is the Nurture Service Programme with Central Singapore Community Development Council. Aimed at enhancing the quality of lives of needy children aged four to 12, RGS students have been serving the Nurture Centres through organising meaningful learning activities for the children since 2011 and expect to continue this meaningful project in the years ahead. RGS has also been nominated the most supportive school for the YMCA Youth for Causes programme 2011. Funded by Citi Foundation, the programme aims to promote social entrepreneurship and community leadership development among Singapore youths through social entrepreneurship. 12 RGS teams were selected for the programme and managed to raise funds and increase public awareness for the social causes of their VWOs.
Overseas Service-Learning
RGS Overseas Service-Learning (OSL) aims to serve the needs of overseas communities in a way that promotes selfsustainability and reciprocity. OSL also aims to develop character, leadership and lifeskills of RGS students as they contribute to improving the lives of the underprivileged and their communities. In 2011, the OSL expedition to Cebu Island, Philippines, was launched. Working with Teen Challenge Philippines, OSL worked to improve the lives of abandoned Cebuano street children through a series of activities such as English lessons, song and dance lessons. In collaboration with School of the Arts, OSL donated over a thousand childrens books and set up a library system at the centre. OSL also painted murals of the local scenery to brighten the atmosphere of the learning spaces at the centre. The team worked with the Cebu City Mobile School project, providing English lessons to street children in Cebu so as to encourage the children to take up proper schooling. The trip marked the beginning of a meaningful collaboration and partnership between RGS and Teen Challenge Philippines in improving the conditions of the local Cebu community.
RGS Career Fair 2011

The Annual Career Fair organised for Year 4 girls was held on 27 June 2012. In a 3 hour time-slot, there were 11 sessions by 22 speakers from a wide variety of professions and institutions and a concurrent Career Fair at the Evelyn Norris Hall with 13 participating institutions. The personnel from the institutions provided much insight for the girls as they prepare for their transition to RI. The highlight and focus this year was to have our alumni share as speakers. At least 12 former girls representing Healthcare, Research/Engineering, Legal Services, Public Service, Marketing, and Sports industry returned to their alma mater to share their professional and life experiences. It was a valuable opportunity for the current Year 4 girls to learn about real-world experiences and also to network with these seniors who have been and are still living as daughters of a better age.

Work attachments can range from 1 week to the entire school holidays and provide opportunities for our girls to learn lifeskills in authentic situations.
Integration of International Students / Scholars

Upon arrival in October, International scholars were assigned buddies in the form of seniors from an earlier cohort. The senior buddies are usually from the same country as the new scholars to help them adjust to a new living and learning environment in Singapore. Student Leaders from the Peer Support and Prefectorial Boards helped with the planning of their orientation and induction programmes: teaching them the school rules and values, school song and cheers. This year, the scholars invited local students who had offered their friendship and who had helped them adapt to RGS to the Lunar New Year dinner as a gesture of friendship and appreciation.
Work Experience Programme

The Work Experience Programme (WEP) is available for our Year 3 and 4 students during their holiday periods of June & November-December. Year 3 and 4 students have the opportunity to be exposed to different industries through work attachments. In the June holidays this year, 42

Physical Fitness and Health Education Programme
The RGS Physical Education aims to develop Healthier Daughters For A Healthier Age. Through both the sports and physical health modules taught in the PE curriculum, our students are expected to understand and apply the fundamentals of designing a personal tness programme, and make more informed health-related choices. The Eat Think and Play health booklet was compiled as a resource for pupils and PE teachers to complement the Physical Health module. To encourage all students and staff members to lead a healthy holistic lifestyle, the PE department, together with the student House leaders, coordinated more than 25 Inter-House Games (IHG) in terms 2 and 3 this year. Examples of the new IHGs initiatives include Touch Rugby, Design a Rafesian Product, K-pop and Singapore Kindness Movement photo competition. The PE department introduced the Inaugural Sports Fest Challenge during the Annual Sports Festival in May 2012. More than 500 students and staff members formed teams to participate in the 10 stations, which included the F1 Race, Speed Ladder Relay and Back in Space. Over 400 students took part in the individual or team relays and sprint events. The Swimming Carnival was held in July 2012. In addition to the swimathon event, the inaugural Biathlon organised with
both individuals and teams participating in the swim-andrun event. A total of 250 students and teachers participated in the Carnival. By encouraging teams to participate in the various activities organised, the PE department endeavours to promote greater mass participation and encourage teamwork, respect and excellence through healthy lifestyle and physical activities.
RGS Talent Scholarship (Sports) and Customisation Programme for Sports Pupils
The RGS Talent Scholarship (Sports) was established in 2008 to recognise the talent of our sports students and to support them in the development of their talents. The scholarship was offered to all Direct School Admission (DSA) sports students who were admitted into Year 1 in RGS. In 2012, a total of 41 Year 1 students from 13 different sports received this scholarship. In addition, 17 Years 2-4 students from Golf, Gymnastics (Artistic), Gymnastics (Rhythmic), Sailing and Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Tenpin Bowling were also awarded the scholarship for their 2011 representations in the ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) and Southeast Asia (SEA) Games. In recognition of the high level of commitment of our athletes to their sports, RGS has put in place a Customisation Programme to provide different educational programming for them.
Co-Curricular Activities in RGS

CCAs in RGS aim to build resilience, deep passion for specic interest areas as well as leadership and teamwork. As CCAs are more experiential by nature, the learning in CCA frequently provides a balanced range of experiential learning opportunities that help develop a strong and healthy body through participation in games, uniformed groups, competitions, overseas trips and workshops. Our pupils continue to benet from the teamwork, people skills and leadership development opportunities in the CCAs. They also perform well in a diverse range of activities and programmes, and these accomplishments demonstrate that, beyond academic excellence, the Rafesian remains indefatigably active in her interests and passions and is committed to giving her best in everything she does.

Elisa Yukie Yokoyama raised the Singapore ag high by winning the Gold medal in sailing for Singapore in the Girls Optimist Championships. In Gymnastics (Rhythmic), Phaan Yi Lin achieved Individual 4th position in the Womens All-Around (Clubs), 5th position in the Womens All-Around (Ribbon), and the Individual AllAround 4th position. Chelsea Lin Fuchs was the only female Singapore representative in the Open Water Swimming event. She achieved 5th positions for both the 5000m and 10000m events, clocking a commendable 1hr 19mins 28.82secs and 2hr 43mins 37.76secs respectively. Samantha Louisa Yeo Ginn achieved an individual Bronze in Womens 200m Breaststroke and a Team Gold in Womens 4 x 100m Medley Relay. She also achieved 4th in Womens 100m Breaststroke and 5th in Womens 50m Breaststroke.

Staff Sergeant Kwek Le Yin (414) from National Cadet Corps (Land) participated in the Exercise Thunder Warrior in New Zealand from 9 - 19 January 2012. Three cadets from National Cadet Corps (Land) participated in the HQ NCC Specialist Course (Central District). Neo Kai Xin Natasha (315) and Tay Min Yi (301) achieved Course Best Cadet, while Kwek Shu Ying (301) achieved Best in General Specialist Knowledge. In National Police Cadet Corps (Sea), Wang Jia Ying of 413 achieved the Singapore Police Force - National Police Cadet Corps Badge and the Best Unit Cadet Award. Five of our NPCC (Sea) cadets were selected to participate in the Singapore Youth Festival Opening Ceremony Parade - three in the Guard of Honour Contingent: Chua Pei Xuan (312), Ong Pei Jie Janelle (312), and Vivian Feng Yichen (305) - and two in the Supporting Contingent Chee En Cui (210), Low Si Xuan Andrea (211). Five NPCC (Sea) Year 3 cadets also served in the CHINGAY Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Contingent: Teng Wen Li (304), Vivian Feng Yichen (305), Sim Ying Sarah (310), Sim Yu Hui Stephanie (310) and Chua Pei Xuan (312). 2 teams from the Girls Brigade took part in the National Creative Cheer Competition organised by Girls Brigade Head

To increase the cohesiveness of the staff, Staff Bonding Day and Department Bonding Day were organised. The annual Staff Dinner was celebrated in conjunction with Teachers Day. Fruits were provided once every month to encourage healthy living and birthdays were celebrated during staff common time. participation in and facilitation of training workshops in school, and conferences held in Singapore and around the world. In promoting professional excellence, our staff are encouraged to present their research papers and best practices at local and overseas conferences. This year, RGS staff members presented papers at the National Science Teachers Conference (USA), Asia-Pacific Gifted Conference (Dubai) and the Teachers Conference (Singapore), among others. Programme at the National Institute of Education from July to November 2012. Senior Teacher (Aesthetics), Mrs Leung Hui Leng and Senior Teacher (English Language), Mrs Jassie Teo have embarked on a Specialist Diploma in Educational Assessment at the Singapore Examination and Assessment Board on RGS sponsorship from March to December 2012. Head of Department (Physical Education & CCA), Ms Mariette Ong and Subject Head (Internationalisation), Mr Azahar Bin Mohamed Noor completed their Master in Gifted Education programme at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in 2011/12. Ms Syazwani Binte Amrun and Ms Ling Shuang Ning completed the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education at the NIE under RGS sponsorship in 2011/12. Mdm Chen Hsin Yu of the Mother Tongue Department was supported on Professional Development Leave to pursue a Doctorate of Philosophy in Literature at the Central China Normal University from April to December 2012.
Staff Outreach
Consultancy RGS Pedagogical Research Lab (RGS PeRL) offers consultancy to schools on curriculum and pedagogy. Its mission is to contribute to the development of a collaborative community of practitioners with a research-oriented perspective to classroom practices. RGS PeRLs workshops emphasise the application of evidence-backed theories and principles to classroom practice. As the trainers are educators themselves with extensive experience in curriculum design and pedagogy, the workshops designed are practical and relevant to the context. RGS PeRL offers both customized and standard modules in Design of the Performance Task and Curriculum Design. The additional value of RGS PeRL Consultancy is the Practice Study. Over a period of 3 months, the consultants offer ongoing post-workshop guidance to assist participants to apply their learning to actual classroom practice. RGS PeRLs in-house research ndings are also freely shared at RGS PeRL workshops as well as conferences, both local and beyond. F1 Centre for Innovation This centre will serve as a hub for schools to collaborate and explore new ways of promoting the study of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics especially among female students. Corporate Citizenry The RGS Corporate Citizenry Committee formed of executive and administrative staff organised a Reading-Baking-Games Day for children from the Asian Womens Welfare Association (AWWA) Family Service Centre in December 2011. Both RGS staff and children from AWWA Family Service Centre enjoyed a day of games, reading and baking. This was the rst such effort by the Committee and plans are in place for more in the future.
Educational Outreach and Leadership

RGS contributions to educational outreach and leadership extend to all schools and comprise: WELL the first field study centre located in Dairy Farm Nature Reserve to promote experiential learning in an authentic setting. WELLCoT WELL Community of Teachers is a fraternity of like-minded teachers coming together to design interdisciplinary curricula and conduct learning activities at WELL. FPSP (Singapore) - RGS provides her stewardship in the organisation of FPSP in Singapore through its annual coaches and evaluation workshops, Resource Day and National Finals competition. SMMFC This international outreach effort, in collaboration with Ngee Ann Secondary School, provides students with the opportunity to translate real-world problems into mathematical problems and solve them using mathematical models.

As a Centre for Excellence in RGS, RGS PeRL is driven by the schools stretch goal of being a world class educational institution for young women. Such an aspiration compels evidence-backed professional standards that enhance the schools clout and credibility as a reputed institution. RGS PeRLs Research and Consultancy domains are designed to cultivate professional inquiry and collaboration that sharpen pedagogical practices and innovation. Its uniqueness as a school-based centre lies in its practitioner-oriented paradigm to educational discourse. Research Project: Contribution of the Performance Task to Teaching and Learning

Currently, a final report is being crafted on RGS PeRLs 2 year research project on the Performance Task as an alternative assessment. Although the project was carried out in RGS, its ndings can inform not only RGS assessment review and innovation but also be relevant to other schools who may wish to learn from the schools experiences. Emerging ndings on this project were shared at the Teachers Conference held in Singapore (1 May-1 June 2012). At the end of the year, the final report will be presented to the school to inform its curriculum review practices as well as at the International Conference of the Australian Association for Research in Education and the Asia Pacic Educational Research Association (2-6 December 2012).

To leverage on these developments, RGS PeRLs Research domain is exploring the possibility of inquiring into teacher traits, motivations and skills for Practitioner Inquiry. The findings can inform the educational fraternity on how to enhance teacher professionalism and nurture learners who are adept thinkers in the 21st century. Through constant scanning of educational trends and standards, RGS PeRL is also in the process of creating robust learning resources that are used for teacher development. For instance, in-house resources on Formative Assessment were designed for a workshop for Academic Heads. These resources will continue to be rened and updated.
Consultancy
RGS PeRL offers Consultancy in areas like Curriculum Design, Practitioner Inquiry and Design of the Performance Task, to RGS and other schools. The focus is on sharing how principle-driven and evidence-backed pedagogy can be translated to the local classroom context. The overarching objective is to build an inclusive network of like-minded educators interested in theory and evidence-based educational best practices.
Teacher Professionalism and Practitioner Inquiry

Research has shown that the most critical factor in quality learning is the quality teacher. The habit of reective practice is a hallmark of such a teacher who derives professional satisfaction from knowing what works in the classroom and why. To facilitate Practitioner Inquiry, RGS PeRL has established clear research protocols and a system of research mentoring aimed at scaffolding the teachers research endeavours. Publications
In-house publication: RGS PeRL plans to produce an annual in-house professional development magazine called Insights. The concept is that of a coffee table book, enabling easy perusal and inspiring ideas. The aim is to articulate facets of RGS professional practices that are often, implicit. Currently, we are in the process of collecting our teachers contributions on: a. Pedagogical Inquiry; ie, research projects in RGS b. Pedagogical practices; ie, strategies that promote effective learning RGS PeRL Research Guide: This guide book outlines the research categories in the school, the research protocols and our policies pertaining to educational research. RGS PeRL handbook: The handbook encapsulates the overall intent of the organisation, its structures and processes. Performance Task (PT) booklet: The booklet, published in 2011, provides step-by-step guidelines on the design of the PT as an alternative assessment, augmented by literature review. This booklet is part of the PT workshop toolkit and is also sold to interested educators.

Launched this year, the RGS PeRL website offers updated information on its Research and Consultancy domains. The information includes research projects conducted in the school as well as podcasts and vignettes on good practices. RGS PeRL looks forward to working closely with the school community and beyond to add verve and vitality to teaching and learning.

The RGS Chapter
The RGS Chapter has been a supporter of RGS and has assisted the school in many ways: close collaboration in school activities, organising of workshops and social events to promote alumni networking and membership drives to encourage Rafesians to cherish their unique identity as a member of the RGS community. Activities organised over the past months include a Tea & Talk session on A Fresh Approach to a Beautiful & Natural Smile Orthodontics and Dentofacial and a cooking workshop titled Learn to Savour Life One dish at a time.

To support the school in broadening the categories of awards given out to students on RGS Speech Day, several cohorts have instituted annual awards that emphasise the importance of recognising students who demonstrate exemplary leadership or communication skills. The RGS Chapter, Heart of Gold and Sisters at Heart awards are aimed at encouraging pupils to develop character values such as exemplary care and consideration for others.

Parents for RGS Association (PRGS)

The last quarter of 2011 began with the Year 3 Breakfast Dialogue with Principals. The highly interactive discussions promoted positive feedback and communication between interested parents and the school. This dialogue was followed by the second (of two forums) of the highly popular Nurturing The Highly Able Child Intellectual, Emotional and Mental Well-Being Forum series conducted by Edwin Choy, founder of Centre for Fathering, who advised parents on ways of focusing on successes of their daughters instead of failures. The CmPS APPdicted-
Cyberwellness Talk had a CmPS group of students sharing their interesting findings on students internet behaviour with parents, and the Transition to RI(JC) talk saw parents of former RGS girls in RI(JC) as well as a few former RGS girls in RI(JC) sharing with our members their experiences in transition to RI(JC). PRGS Family Day made its debut in 2011 with Carnival: Going Country11. From learning the Hoedown Throwdown Dance (which had parents and daughters dancing in lively step together) to competing in the fastest candy- oss eating contest, the checked shirts, cowboy hats and boots completed the days fun. Peaceful and idyllic Pulau Ubin was awakened by the visit of close to 60 PRGS members and 2 eco-guides. The wonderfully refreshing Sensorial Trail Walk had participants slowing down their pace to smell the owers, appreciate the rustic ways of a bygone time, amidst a wealth of ora and fauna that is Pulau Ubin. The amazing variety of food (contributed by generous members) for the Teachers Day Appreciation Lunch set in cozy ambience were equaled only by the good cheer and camaraderie shared by the principals, teachers, staff members, parent volunteers and the PRGS Exco members.
It was a warm and meaningful way of expressing our special thanks to the teachers for all that they do for our daughters. In keeping with the times, PRGS started its social media networking with the launch of the PRGS Facebook Community Page named Parents for RGS Association (PRGS) in July 2011. Members who are friends of the Page can easily receive news updates, spot themselves in the photos uploaded with regular postings of PRGS events whilst being a vital part of a community of RGS parents. With PRGS coming close to 10 years, the time was opportune for a re-branding of PRGS as we positioned PRGS objective of achieving that 3-way strategic link among parents, pupils and the school, towards the total development of our daughters. The rebranded logo identity was applied across all PRGS communication materials for an integrated and consistent visual messaging of our said objective. 2012 began with a rousing welcome for the Year 1s and their parents. PRGS played a supporting role in settling new parents and in familiarising them with the RGS academic curriculum through parent orientation talks and workshops organised in conjunction with the school. PRGS further assisted in and partook of the schools activities and festivities which included the RGS Open House, Sports Festival and the ORA Walk-A-Jog-a-thon and Fun Fair. These events afforded PRGS opportunities to share their experiences with Primary 6 parents at Open House and to show our teamwork and sportsmanship at the sports stadium. RGS Outreach: Local & International Network

Collaboration with local and international partners offers opportunities for RGS to share and learn from best practices with other top institutions and organisations. RGS outreach efforts continue to grow from strength to strength in several areas.
RGS continues to share best practices on school reform and professional development in response to requests from a number of schools in Singapore and from overseas. Among the educational personnel who visited RGS were: Principal and Head of Senior High School, St Cuthberts College (New Zealand), Deputy Principal, St Margarets College (New Zealand), Director, Division of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Hubei Provincial Department of Education (PRC), Mr Yohsuke Tsuchiya, Researcher, Nihon University and Ibaraki University, Mr Vadim Moshkovich, Russian State Member and businessman, Mr Mikhail Dmitriev and Mr Kirill Ignakhin of McKinsey & Company (Moscow, Russia), Mr Bill Claxton, Lanschool, and Mr Yong Lit Seng, Director, Group Technology Development of SEGi University of Malaysia. RGS also hosted visits from the following schools and educational organisations from August 2011 August 2012: Taipei First Girls High School (Taiwan), Mingdao High School (Taiwan), Shanghai No 3 Girls Middle School (PRC), Sekolah Mutiara Harapan (Indonesia), Ofcials from the Suzhou Provincial Department of Education and Principals from Suzhou schools (PRC). RGS continues to engage Primary 6 pupils and their parents through events like Tea with the Principal, talks and road shows at various primary schools and the annual Open
House, which sees a steady increase in the number of visitors every year. The RGS community was kept well informed through Spiral, the Yearbook and a fresh range of corporate collaterals. The school is also in the process of revamping the RGS website and producing a new corporate video to better present information about the school to its stakeholders and the public. RGS also engages parents through Breakfast Meetings with the Principal for each level, Year 1 Orientation Tea, workshops for Years 1-4 parents on helping their daughters adjust to the learning environment at RGS, the annual Sports Festival and Racial Harmony Week activities. The school is also mindful of its commitment to serve the nation and community through Community Problem Solving Programme (CmPS), ServiceLearning and Community service projects.
Local Partnerships
RGS valued partners continue to support the schools educational goals and programmes. The highlight this year was the launch of the RGS F1 Centre for Innovation on 28 July, the rst F1 Centre for Innovation set up by a girls school. The Centre will serve as a hub for schools to collaborate and explore new ways of providing students with the skills

and competencies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education through integrated curriculum and meaningful real-world application. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed at the launch between RGS and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES). With the MOU, RGS and IES will work in collaboration, through the programmes offered by the RGS F1 Centre for Innovation, to promote engineering education and careers, especially among girls. Our synergistic partners, GlaxoSmithKline, Economic Development Board and NParks maintain their commitment to the Wallace Environmental Learning Laboratory (WELL), our eld study centre in Dairy Farm Nature Park which is used by staff and students from RGS and schools in Singapore. WELLCoT (WELL Community of Teachers) continues to provide professional development workshops held at WELL as well as run activities at WELL for students. GSK-EDB maintains its belief in RGS stewardship of the Future Problem Solving Programme (Singapore) to nurture talented students with an orientation to anticipating and solving challenges in the future. Since 2010, the annual Chinese Literature Camp has been a collaborative effort between RGS and the Singapore Literature Society (SLS) to develop a passion and deep understanding
in secondary school students for the Chinese Language and culture. In order to recognise our close relationship based on shared goals and co-ownership of a very worthy event, RGS will be presenting SLS with the Cengal Award for Partnerships this year. RGS also continues to collaborate with NIEs Centre for Research, Pedagogy and Practice through its Research arm, RGS Pedagogical Research Lab (RGS PeRL), to foster a culture of reective practice and the use of research-based pedagogy for learning.
International Partnerships
The goal of the RGS Internationalisation Programme is to develop, in our students, a global mindset and cross cultural skills and sensitivities. The various programmes expose our students to Asia and the world and allow them to interact and engage with their peers and local communities outside Singapore. In 2011, 33 overseas programmes were organised by various academic departments, CCA groups, Talent Development Department, Leadership Board and the Overseas Service Learning team. In total, more than 1,000 students participated
in the various overseas trips accounting for more than 50 per cent of RGS student population. Some of the notable initiatives include the rst overseas Character Development Programme conducted for CCA leaders to enhance their leadership skills and build character through adventure-based learning. The Year 2 students, as a cohort, had the opportunity to engage with school children in Batam during their community engagement programme, while the RGS Choir, comprising 53 members, had the opportunity to perform at the Advent Sing Vienna musical festival, a destination well-known for its choral tradition. Collaborations with our partner schools remain a core thrust of our internationalisation programme. The twinning programme with Shanghai No. 3 Girls Middle & High Schools and Zhongshan Overseas Middle School was launched successfully when 18 RGS students participated in a cultural and language immersion programme with our partner schools. Reciprocating the exchange, 18 girls and 4 teachers from Shanghai No 3 Girls Middle School participated in an immersion trip to RGS from 6 8 August 2012 to establish a platform for students from our schools to deepen their interest in learning the Chinese Language and culture for the RGS girls and the learning of the English Language and multi-culturalism for the students from Shanghai.
The Bridges for Engagement Programme between RGS and Tunku Kurshiah College (TKC) was conducted on 19-23 June 2011. Twenty-four Year 2 students from the Regional Studies Programme, accompanied by 3 teachers, were hosted by TKC in Seremban. Now in its forth year, the programme provided opportunities for our students to practise Malay language with their TKC friends and develop cross-cultural competencies to engage with our neighbours. The Dwen An-Rafes Schools Student Exchange Programme continues to be an important student exchange platform to nurture student leaders in service of the community. RGS girls travelled to Taiwan in February and then hosted visiting Taiwanese students in July as part of the two-way exchange. As we continue to expand our partnership collaborations into the area of student exchange, we will offer more opportunities and destinations for students who are keen to embark on an intensive cultural immersion programme. This will full our objectives of providing not just extensive and wideranging programmes, but also opportunities for an intensive international experience for our students.

Ning Hui is an accomplished pianist, and was awarded the Pianomania Scholarship Award at the 4 th Singapore Performers Festival 2012. She is also the Grand Prize winner, as well as Category winner of the inaugural Singapore Steinway Youth Piano Competition 2012. In her CCA, she was secretary and concert-mistress of Raffles Strings, and has led the ensemble group to a successful concert Con passione in 2012. Ning Hui has successfully auditioned for an accelerated entry place into the Royal College of Music, United Kingdom, and will begin her studies in the Bachelor of Music (Honours) Degree course in September 2012. in the composition, arrangement and improvisation of music for various ensemble groups.

Jessica Tan is an excellent pianist who came in second in the Intermediate Category of the National Piano Violin Competition organized by the National Arts Council. She was also a nalist at the NAFA FB Benjamin Competition, as well as a Semi-nalist at the Singapore Steinway Youth Piano Competition. A student conductor of the RGS Choir, she has contributed signicantly in selecting pieces for Choir concerts, on top of soloist singing and dance performances in various choir events. She has also served the school faithfully
Donna excels in her sport, and her current national ranking (Epee) is 1st in the Womens Cadet Team, 3rd in the Womens Junior Team, and 10th in the Womens Senior Team. She has represented Singapore in several overseas competitions, including the World Junior & Cadet Fencing Championship 2012 in Moscow, Russia, and the Commonwealth Junior Fencing Championship 2012 in St Helier, Jersey, United Kingdom. In 2011, she clinched the silver medal at the Asian Fencing Championship in Hong Kong and was part of the Singapore Cadet Team who brought home the bronze medal in the Asian Junior and Cadet Championship in Bangkok.

Regionally, she also attained a Bronze medal in the Womens Foil Individual in the Fencing Singapore International 2012. an Individual All-Round 4 th position, and at the recent ASEAN Schools Games, she was also instrumental in helping her team achieved a 3rd placing. Her other accomplishments include Individual All-Round 3rd position at the Singapore Gymnastics Open 2012, where she also helped her team to clinched the rst place, and Individual All-Round 1st position at the National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship 2012.

Fan Jin is currently 4th in her national ranking (Epee) in the Womens Youth Team, and she has taken part in the World Cadet and Junior Fencing Championships in Moscow, Russia, where she was ranked 52nd out of 88 competitors from 64 countries in the Womens Epee Cadet Individual event. In the Hong Kong Open 2012 in February, she also achieved a 33rd placing, facing erce competition from competitors around the world.

Jessica has performed consistently well in the Optimist racing scene, and at the IODA World Sailing Championship 2012, held in the Dominican Republic, she completed the competition on a high note by clinching the 3rd overall title, 2nd Girls title and together with her teammates, retained the Overall World Champion Team title that they won last year. In the local scene, she has also achieved 4th overall placing in the Singapore National Youth Championship 2012 in the Gold Fleet. A dedicated member of RGS Sailing, Jessica nished 4th in B Div Girls and is part of the team that won the 2nd Overall Team position at the SSSC/SPSC National Inter-School Sailing Championship 2012.
A talented and disciplined athlete, Yi Lin was one of only two Rhythmic gymnasts to represent Singapore at the SEA Games in Indonesia last November 2011, where she achieved

Singapore in various international competitions. At the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia, she did Singapore proud by achieving 3rd position in the 200m Breaststroke event, 4 th position in the 100m Breaststroke event, and contributed to the Gold medal tally in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay. In July 2012, she participated in the ASEAN School Games where she achieved two Golds for Singapore in the 4 x 100m Medley Race and the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay, three 2nd positions in 50m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke and 200m Individual Medley, 3rd in 200m Breaststroke, and 7th in 100m Buttery.

Hui Yu, an awardee of the 2011 Singapore Schools Sports Council (SSSC) Best Girl (Swimming) award, did Singapore proud in the 26th SEA Games 2011 held in Indonesia, where she swam seven events, and achieved two Golds for Singapore in the 4 x 100m Freestyle and 4 x 200m Freestyle Relays. Competent in all four strokes and an accomplished middle and long distance swimmer, Hui Yu also swam the individual freestyle and individual Medleys, achieving 3rd position in 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle, 7 th position in 200m Individual Medley, and was a nalist in the 800m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley events.
In 2011, Chelsea became Singapores fastest Open Water swimmer when she underwent at least 4 open water swimming trials over varied distances of 5000m and 10,000m, enduring trying conditions and varying tides. At the SEA Games, she was the youngest Open Water competitor, and she did Singapore proud by clinching 5th position in the 5000m Open Water Swimming with a time of 1 hour 19 minutes and 28.82 seconds, and another commendable 5th position in the 10,000m Open Water Swimming with a time of 2 hours 43 minutes and 37.76 seconds.

Yukie to receive the Straits Times Star of the Month Award. Time and again, Yukie met stiff competition head-on, and has proven that what matters are passion, determination, grit and good, common sense. These are the admirable traits that Yukie possesses, and have helped her stay ahead in her pursuit of excellence in her sport. Yukie may only be fteen years old, but she is already a veteran in the Optimist racing scene, having competed in four IODA World Sailing Championships in the last four years. Her performance has progressed consistently with the experience she has gained. In the IODA World Sailing Championship 2011, held in December in New Zealand, Yukie was part of Team Singapore that brought back the Overall World Team Championship title, for the second time, since 2006. She also nished a credible 23rd out of a eet of 210 in the individual category. At the recent IODA World Sailing Championship 2012, Yukie clinched not only the Overall World Champion title, but also the World Champion Girl title, and, together with her teammates, completed the clean sweep by retaining the Overall World Champion Team title. Her impressive performance is a tting close as she completes her swan song as the Optimist class for Under-15. Regionally, she won the Gold medal for Team Singapore in the 26th SEA Games held in Jakarta, and was part of the team that brought back the Champion title at the IODA Optimist Asian 2012 in Sri Lanka. A committed member of the RGS Sailing team, Yukie was also instrumental in helping the school achieve 2nd Overall position in the SSSC/ SPSC National Inter-School Sailing Championships. The Rafesian Award is the most prestigious award given to a daughter of the RGS family. She epitomises the values and ideals that dene the ethos of the school. This year, the award is presented to Amanda Choo Min Hui, for sterling all-round excellence in the academic, leadership and service domains. A highly intelligent young lady with wisdom and temperament beyond her years, Amanda believes that true education is not just about academic excellence but about making ones life meaningful. Her academic credentials are stellar. Highly motivated, with an unagging determination to excel, Amanda received the Outstanding Academic Performance award for 3 consecutive years (2008 to 2010), and the top in Subject awards for Literature (2008), English Language (2010) and Mathematics (2008 & 2010). As a recipient of various scholarships such as the MOE EESIS, A*STAR Science Award and Young Defence Scientists Programme Scholarship, her prowess in Math and Science were evident in the many awards won over the years. Participating in the Worlds Scholars Cup World Finals (2009), she clinched top placings - 1st for Debate and Literature and 2nd for the Overall Individual Category. As an active member of the Shooting (Air Pistol & Air Rifle) CCA, her marksmanship earned her team the 1st and 2nd placings in the National Inter-School Shooting Championships in 2008 and 2009 respectively. In recognition for her performance, Amanda received the RGS Colours Award - Merit Performance (2008-2011). As the Vice-Head Prefect of the RGS Prefectorial Board, Amanda displayed the strength of an exceptional leader with strong moral integrity. She was awarded the RGS Colours Award - Outstanding Leadership for the Prefectorial Board (2011). Despite her busy schedule, Amanda is also activity involved in various community projects. For her outstanding service to the community, Amanda was awarded the National Youth Achievement Award (Bronze) (2010), the RGS Character Award (2011) and the ORA Community Service Award (2011). Amanda truly epitomises the qualities of an RGS girl and is a true Rafesian in both mind and spirit.

Singapore Literature Society
The Singapore Literature Society (SLS) has been RGS valued partner since SLS approached RGS to jointly organise the National Secondary Schools Chinese Literature Camp in 2010. This annual event provides a platform for Chinese Language teachers and students to organize an event that promotes and celebrates the learning of the Chinese Language and Literature among students from secondary schools in Singapore. It also provides participants with the opportunity to work with local writers. Each year, about 100 RGS students are involved in the event, either as student organisers or participants. SLS lends its support to the camp by providing expertise, resources and time to this worthy cause. RGS also receives complimentary copies of SLS annual publication of literary works written by local writers. It is this conviction and commitment to widening and deepening the appreciation of Chinese Language and Literature, culture and creative writing that inspires us all.
