PROCESS CONTROL (Electronics & Control Engineering)

B.Tech III Year I Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations December/January 2013/14

Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 Discuss about the following: (a) Elements of process control. (b) Self regulation.

Max. Marks: 80

(a) What is the effect of integral control action on the process? List the characteristics of integral action. (b) An integral controller is used for speed control with a set point of 15 rpm, range of 10-20 rpm, the constant Ki= -0:20% controller output per second per percentage error. The controller output is 28% initially. If the speed jumps to 17 rpm calculate the controller output after 3 seconds for a constant error. (a) Describe the desirable properties of thermo couples in industrial use. (b) Explain the mechanical properties which must be considered in the selection of thermo wells. (a) Brief explain the principle and operation of a displacement type pneumatic PD controller. How the derivative time can be adjusted in this controller? (b) Outline the design steps involved in developing an electronic PI controller. (a) Discuss about tuning of cascade controllers. (b) Explain in detail about electro-pneumatic actuators. Discuss about steam plant control systems. (a) Explain how stability of exothermic reactors can be achieved using process control principles. (b) Discuss about how conversion of a reaction can be controlled. Write about any two of the following: (a) Relative gain analysis. (b) Optimum air flow. (c) Pressure control methods. *****
