Karla Karcioglu: the hirable journalist

With an assortment of skills, an open mind and a passion to learn more, Karla Karcioglu is graduating Thompson Rivers Universitys journalism program with a bachelors degree and a desire for more work experience. Over the past two years in the of bachelor journalism program Karcioglu has achieved many personal goals. She was recognized by the Jack Webster Foundation which awarded her a student scholarship as-well-as the opportunity to attend the Webster Awards. Her article on long boarding in the campus paper circulated across North America, even making it to Asia, and Macleans On Campus mentioned her article on low online textbook sales. She considers herself to be wise beyond her years, with an understanding of how economics, politics and culture effect people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in unique ways. Karcioglu has no qualms about walking up to a complete stranger and asking them to share their life story or let her take their photo. She could easily envision herself in a newsroom, working along side other journalists who share her passion. With skills in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro X, Audacity and many social media platforms,she has no doubt she would be a great addition to any newsroom. Karcioglu happily anticipates the next chapter of her life as she approaches graduation, ready to learn and share knowledge and skills world.

Maybe Chilliwack reporters were having a slow news day, maybe nothing like it had happened before but for some reason the marriage of a ballerina from the U.K. and a lumberjack from Canada warranted a full page spread in the Chilliwack Times. Ian Karcioglu and Kasey Cossins were the citys celebrity couple. After their daughter Karla Karcioglu was born she too became a regular photo addition in the local papers most memorably at the age of two for accidently inhaling water through her nose. But as she grew, Karcioglus desire to be featured in the newspaper evolved from a regular photo-op to an aspiration to produce content. Ive always enjoyed reading the newspaper, Karcioglu said. At some point in my life I decided I wanted to write for one.
