Megan Goh (19) 5 Benevolence

Speech Delivered on Fighting for a cause: Achieving Universal Primary Education Good morning fellow schoolmates. I am Megan Goh from secondary 5 Benevolence and I am the Head of the Humanitarian Society. Fellow students, what is Education means to you? For most of us, education is the most important tool to opening more doors and opportunities. However, for some, they still do not understand the importance of education and are happily drifting through their school years. I agree with Nelson Madela, that Education is the most powerful weapon, which one can use to change the world. Almost 70 million children across the world are prevented from going to school each day as they are forced to work on the rice fields. Girls are far less likely to attend schools than boys in many of the worlds poorest countries because of social norms that states that women should stay at home and look after their children. Therefore, by providing primary education to these poorer countries, we are able to increase the literacy rate of the country and promote gender equality and even empower women through education. Therefore Education is the most powerful weapon, which one can use to change the world. Education is the road that children follow to reach their full potential in life. You and I are given this chance to reach our fullest potential in life, to our ultimate goal. But what about these unprivileged children that are not given this chance that you and I are given to reach their full potential in life? And yet many children in need around the world do not get a quality education where they can learn and develop. Why not give these children a chance to reach their full potential in life by supporting the cause that is Achieving Universal Primary Education. We can show our support to this cause by participating in these two events that would be held in school this coming month. The two events would be Running for a cause where we aim to cover a distance of about 100 kilometers as a school to raise funds to fund students that are studying in the poorer countries and secondly, a Family carnival whereby students open stores to sell drinks or snacks. The total amount of funds raised would also be given to charitable organizations that support this cause. Every cents count to the future of each childs life. Hope I have convinced you on supporting the cause, that is, Achieving Universal Primary Education. Thank you.
