Goals for Public Education To provide the highest standard of education to young people.

To promote a culture of respect, tolerance, and confidence in students. To teach knowledge and skills to enable students to become lifelong learners. To help students prepare for a changing world and unforeseeable demands in which continuing education will be essential. Keys to the development of classroom culture and environment Teacher presentation- present yourself professionally to your students. Establish and maintain an environment that is suited for learning. Always be prepared and focused on providing your students with the means necessary for learning. Equity and respectful dialog is very crucial to a healthy classroom environment. Unpleasant student behaviorI. Being late for class with no reasonable excuse. This is very annoying to me as it sets a bad precedent right of the start. The Students who are not responsible enough to be on time before class will certainly not be responsible during class. II. The student who pretends not to understand directions or concepts. Although some students will ultimately need more guidance than others, some students will try and use this to their advantage. III. Students who use disrespectful dialog in class. These students will most likely use this tactic to try and gain attention from the teacher or their peers. This is very disruptive and creates a bad learning environment. IV. Bullying. Any form of abuse is completely unacceptable including verbal, physical, psychological, or exclusion. Classroom management is the teachers ability to establish and maintain an environment that is suited to learning. The teacher possesses a repertoire of procedures to ensure optimal learning for all students. Classroom management has to do with procedures and routines to the point of becoming rituals. Good classroom management promotes good classroom discipline. There are many reasons for a classroom to develop discipline issues. The biggest reason for potential problems in the classroom is poor teaching style. Classroom discipline is about impulse management and self-control. Discipline deals with how people behave within the school. Classroom management and classroom discipline are very commonly interchanged, but they are distinctly different topics and should not be lumped together as if they were synonymous. Classroom management deals with how things are done and discipline deals with how people behave. Classroom management is the Teachers responsibility and classroom discipline is the students responsibility.

Classroom management is enhanced when procedures are: 1. Explained to students 2. Modeled for students 3. Practiced by students 4. Reinforced by practicing again, and periodically (when necessary) 5. Practiced again to insert into long-term memory When procedures are learned, routines are established. Routines give good structure to instruction. If classroom management is sufficiently set up and followed through, students will have good discipline and therefore classroom disciple will be good as well.

Implementation of My Classroom1. 2. 3. 4. Design and arrange classroom to optimize student engagement. Classroom must be interactive, and related to grade level and subjects taught. Classroom must be dynamic. Easy rearrangement of classroom will be important. Avoid narrow high traffic areas. High traffic areas should have ample room for student movements.

Procedures to Implement the First Week Washroom breaks Pencil sharpening Retrieving Textbooks and Day Planners Prompts and Hands Up Late or Absents What to do when students finish work early Manage last 10 minutes of class time properly Opening the Day Routine- (Grade 5) 1. Establish Professional Presence. Look professional, and sound professional. 2. Welcome and acknowledge all students. 3. Deal with any procedural problems immediately. 4. Dedicate 5 minutes every morning for O Canada and The Lords Prayer 5. Dedicate 5 minutes to explain to students what the agenda for the day is. Its imperative that students know your plan is to be executed every single day. InterventionsVerbal and non-verbal interventions are key to good classroom management. Interventions can be very effective if used properly and at the proper time. Timing is key in the prevention of classroom disruptions. As a teacher we need to foresee or predict that a disruption will occur and intervene before it occurs. Whenever possible use non-verbal interventions first. Non-Verbal interventions I would utilize

1. Changing the pace of the classroom activities. 2. Being active and visible. Moving to teach from the problem area. 3. Removing distracting objects. Verbal interventions I would utilize 1. Discreetly asking problem student to refocus on task. 2. Ask student how can I help so they can get on task. 3. If the disruption is bad enough I would have a class discussion about respecting class rules and regulations.

Classroom Rules and Implementation- (Senior Years) Main rules Be on time. (On time is 10 minutes before class starts) Interact respectfully at all times No outside electronics. I.E. cell phones, iPods, laptops, etc. are to be used in the classroom Be organized and ready for school These four key rules are very important in developing a focused, professional classroom environment and will foster a good learning environment. Designed to minimize classroom disruptions, the rules are essential for creating responsible students. These rules will be emphasized as top priority and together as a team building exercise the whole class will work towards achieving the highest standard in learning environment. The classroom will be a team and as a result a sense of pride and belonging will occur. Introduction and Implementation of The Rules From the first day of class, rules will be clearly stated and explained. A culture of equity and professional dialogue will be modeled. Rules and guidelines will be talked about and repeated over the first few school days. The rules and guidelines will then become routine. Make students feel a part of something special. Build something special by setting high expectations and celebrate the good things students create. Consequences Students who are late more than once per week will be marked absent. These absences will be reported to students parents or caretakers. Late students will only be allowed to enter the classroom after getting approval from the teacher.

Students who do not interact respectfully will be made to apologize and repeated violations will result in a yellow paper form. Yellow paper forms are forms used to record misbehaviors. These papers are sent home for parents to sign. This method is very effective in stemming disrespectful attitudes. Any electronic device will be confiscated and returned to students at the end of the school day. Students who are not organized or ready for school activities will lose recess privileges.
