354 514 - Assignment Lecture 6 Review/listen to the 6 series lectures.

Read Chap 5 material associated with Changes in Velocity and Direction. Be able to do Example 5.2 in your text. Below is a piping isometric showing a constant diameter line for getting a gas from process vessel R-101 to R-102. This is ordinary steel process piping. The piping is small relative to the vessel size. There is well developed turbulent flow (50-60 fps) and the flow velocities in the vessels are relatively low. The pressures recorded by measuring instruments (gauges) on the top of each vessel show a b.P that seems higher than expected, even after calibration. You have been asked to do a calculation on the pressure drop between these vessels to see if the measurements are correct. Explain how you would set up the problem for solution and what your assumptions are. Explain what terms are significant in the Bernoulli Equation and what frictional loss terms exist. What are possibilities for a higher than expected pressure drop? The original design work was done by Manzell Engineering. Not only were the original process conditions different, Manzell did not seem to do the work properly. Have the key points outlined for a presentation to the engineering group.
