Education 4709 Issues in Special Education: Children and Youth With Behaviour Disorders Sue Bengry, Fall 2013

Blog Assignment- Classroom Management Plan: Over the entire course, building positive relationships and developing proactive classroom management have been identified as foundational in the development of classroom climate that honours all children including those who come to us with emotional and behavioural issues. Given the discussion on depression and suicide, remember the importance of gathering student information right at the beginning of practicum. So in this last blog you will be tasked with the development of a plan for the first day of your upcoming practicum. The plan can either be in PowerPoint format (see examples below) or a detailed written plan. Make it your plan what you will actually do. You have many resources to assist in the development of this plan but to narrow your thinking down, I suggest you focus on the following taken from The First Days of School by Wong & Wong 2010. 1. The article handed out in class, A Plan in Place by Sarah Jondahl taken from the First Days of School by Wong & Wong, 2010. 2. Go Beyond 4 - Adapt Not Adopt 3. Go Beyond 5 Classroom Management Plans In this article go to the two PowerPoint presentations of Diana Greenhouse and Kazim Cicek noting the content covered, the tone, message to students and what the teacher got out of creating these presentations.

My First Day (Classroom Management Plan)

For my last blog I have chosen to create a written plan for my first day of this upcoming practicum. I have not yet been to the school to see the policies, procedures and expectations put in place school-wide or within my TAs classroom, so creating a script will make it easier to alter at a later date. Afternoon and morning procedures may be switched depending upon upcoming discussions with my Teacher Mentor next week as well. Mr. Tucks Morning Procedures: Come early to set-up PowerPoint and make preparations for the day. Change seating plan to groups of 4 (if possible?) Greet each student at the door and direct them to their assigned seat (Alphabetic for now until I know them better, or talk with Teacher Mentor) Introduce myself (who I am, where I am from, why I am there, etc.) o Include pictures (Family, friends, pets, travels, sports) o Give students time to ask some questions Student Introduction Activity o Snowball Activity Students write their name at the top of a piece of paper and crumple it up into a ball. Students throw the ball into the air (not directly at another student). Students retrieve a random crumpled up paper ball. Instruct students to uncrumple the ball. They must now go around the classroom and find out 3 things about that student (provide guiding questions for this). After this has been completed have them go ask the student to approve that what they have written on their papers is true. Have students introduce and share about their peer. Teach Classroom Procedures and Expectations (PowerPoint) o Explain to students that my Teacher Mentor and I are not the same person; however, for the most part students will be asked to follow similar procedures and expectations. o We follow these so you o Procedures: Entering class When students enter class at the beginning of the day they will be greeted by teacher and referred to bell work.

Students should come prepared for class (pencils sharpened, homework handed in, any other materials prepared) Bellwork Bell Work will be posted on the SMARTboard or whiteboard unless otherwise explained by teacher. Students are to enter the classroom and follow the instructions. Quieting the Class (attention) If teacher claps students will immediately stop what they are doing and copy the pattern clapped. Eyes should be on teacher and students should be listening attentively. Attendance Follow procedure already established by Teacher Mentor for now. Class Work Students will put finished work in the middle of table or desks. A designated student will walk around the room and collect these. Place class work in the classwork folder or basket. Homework Students will hand in homework upon entering classroom in the morning. Homework is to be place in the homework folder or basket. Notes between home and school Notes between home and school are to be written in student agenda. Agendas will be checked during bell work at the beginning of the day and take homes at the end of the day. Absents If a student is absent they can collect work from a peer or the absent folder. Student should wait beside teachers desk at the beginning of the day to discuss when missed time and assignments can be made up. Washroom Breaks Students can use washroom freely during lunch and recess. During class students may only be excused one at a time to use restroom. Dismissal Students are not dismissed when bell rings (includes: recess, lunch, or end of the day). Teacher will dismiss students following agenda and workstation checks. Take Homes

At the end of each day take home messages will be displayed on SMARTboard or whiteboard. Students are to copy these into their agenda before leaving.

Noise Students are to use respectful indoor voices at all times. During announcement, when teacher is talking, and in the hallways students should be silent. Group Work Students have the responsibility to contribute to their group. Students working in groups are still expected to know all material. While working in groups noise procedures are still present. Group Discussion The talking ball. Student that holds the ball gets to talk. May also be used during question asking. Teacher out of the class Students must remain on task and follow procedures/expectations while teacher is out of the room. The educational assistant or teacher across the hall is available in case of an emergency situation. o Expectations: Discuss with students what TAs expectations on. Create expectations collaboratively based upon those preestablished. Post these somewhere in the room. Rewards and punishments Are any already present? Use role-play situations to practice procedures and expectations. Recess! Go out and interact with students. o Learn more names, interests, recognize possible at risk students. Have students take me on a tour of the school. o Gym, library, cafeteria, playground, etc. Read story to students: Perfect Man o Ask students what this story means to them? o Explain to student what the story means to me. Lunch

Mr. Tucks Afternoon Procedures: Observe how TA manages his classroom. o His routines, procedures, expectations, management techniques

o Teaching style Take time to interact with students and get to know their names o Acquire seating plan and start putting names to faces o Try to find out at least one interesting thing about each student Observe ability levels of students o Strengths, weaknesses, interests, etc. Send home letter or message in Agenda o Ask parents to write a short paragraph about their child What should I know?
