RATIONALE: Providing students with a positive physical education experience encourages them to participate and be active. With Heart disease being the number one killer of Americans it is important to convey this to our students at a young age so they can be proactive with their health. Childhood obesity is at an all-time high, up 30%, and on the rise. PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE: Students will be familiar with the concept of tag, and how to safely move about the cafeteria. ANTICIPATORY SET: Instructor will ask various questions Can anyone tell me what disease kills the most Americans? Can anyone tell me what cardiovascular pertains to? * Someone give me one activity that we can participate in to improve cardiovascular health. MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK:

Introductory Activity: T Drills 2-3 Minutes Fitness Activity: Interval Training 5-7 Minutes Lesson Focus: Medic Tag 15-18 Minutes Closing Activity: 2-5 Minutes EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: 2 red jerseys 2 blue jerseys TEACHING STYLE: Direct ADAPTATIONS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS: Instructor may need to seek an aid for one on one supervision with the student. A Picture Exchange Communication System, if available, will allow a student to non-verbally communicate choices for physical activity. The initial screening process conducted at the start of the year determined that the student is physically and mentally able to participate with an aid present for additional motivation and focus. Enjoyable activities that this student enjoys are walking, galloping, and exploring. If the student gets bored or loses focus in this high paced activity, the instructor has additional activities for this student. INTEGRATION WITH OTHER DICIPLINES: Language arts- Pertain is a site word Health/Science- Cardiovascular health. DIVERSITY: Instructor will stress the importance of cooperation and respect for themselves and their fellow students. As a class we will embrace diversity and be accepting of all students. CONTENT SEQUENCE OF MATERIAL Introductory Activity- 2-3 minutes Activity: T Drills Purpose: This dynamic warm-up is simple, yet effective. The quality of the students warm-up will dictate the quality of their performance. It helps students prepare not only physically but mentally as well. Procedure: 2 sets of cones are places in a T form. Students begin at the first cone. One the whistle they proceed at a light jog to the center cone

Once they arrive at center cone, they will defensive slide to the left cone At the left cone they will right defensive slide to the right cone From the right cone students will back pedal to the end of the short line

We will have 2 groups of 12 for this activity. As it progresses and the students get a feel for the rotation of the cones, instructor will add various movements between the cones. High knees Butt kicks Frankenstiens

Fitness Activity- 5-7 minutes Interval Training Please see attached Lesson Focus- Medic Tag Directions: The game is played exactly like tag. The 2 students it (in the blue jerseys) are to tag pedestrians. A pedestrian is anyone not wearing a jersey. Once a pedestrian is tagged, they become patients and must take a knee or T-Bow on the ground until a Medic in the red jersey revives them. Medics cannot be tagged. Every 2 minutes the instructor will blow the whistle and students are to return to their squads. Once in their squads students will be instructed to do 5 push-ups. At this point new medics and taggers are selected. After 2 minutes of Medic Tag, students will return to their squads at the whistle and perform 10 curl-ups. Medic tag will resume after new medics and taggers are selected. After 2 minutes new taggers are selected. Continue this pattern. Students are to abide by all physical education rules. Safety is always first and foremost so students must avoid the various obstacles in the cafeteria. Students are to respect others and play fairly. Closing Activity: Cool Down Static Stretching

Purpose- stretch muscles to minimize soreness and possible injury. Arms Right arm across body Left arm across body Right arm behind head Left arm behind head Legs Hamstring stretch Calve stretch Quad stretch Back Sitting with legs straight out: Cross left over right and then take right elbow to the left side of right knee and twist. Cross right over left and then take left elbow to the right side of left knee and twist EXTENDED ACTIVITY: During the cool down instructor will ask the same three questions from the anticipatory set to assess the knowledge gained during the lesson. IF LESSON FINISHES EARLY: Students will be put back in their squads and we will work on Fitness gram preparation. ASSESSMENT OF LESSON: Diagnostic assessment will take place during the anticipatory set by asking questions. I will formatively assess for progression in flexibility, muscular strength and endurance with the added curl ups and push-ups in the lesson focus. This is more of a fitness activity disguised as a game. Making it more fun encourages the students to participate to full potential.

REFLECTION: November 14, 2013 8:00AM- 9:00AM Students worked harder than they have before during my lesson. They are used to a little more down time. I contribute this to Ms. Lucas understanding of their physical abilities. As I observed I really thought in some instances she let them off too easy on certain things, allowing them to talk between activities. I quickly realized these were breathers. These students are incredibly out of shape. The 2nd grade class is not too bad, but still needed a couple breaks. The 5th grade class could not play tag for more than 60 seconds before everyone was walking. When I explained the idea of incorporating the Fitness gram activities into the lesson focus the students were not happy. I solved this by telling them the next person it or a medic would be the one actively participating in the push-ups and curl ups. As a child I did not like to be it these students love being it. When I was initially selecting the students and bent over to grab the jerseys Ms. Lucas laid on the floor for me the students tackled me. I have seen them do this to her, and had just told them not to move from their squads. Once the children who did not come into physical contact with me were selected they no longer bombarded me over the jerseys. The idea of incorporating the push-ups and curl ups into the lesson was to help increase the students ability. After discussing the Fitness Gram results with Ms. Lucas it was apparent to me that the students needed more practice. If the students are not doing push-ups and curl ups during physical education they are most likely not doing them outside of school. Overall I was impressed with the lesson. I utilized the entire 25 minutes that I was allotted. Students were late getting to physical education due to extended announcements and

reminders. Today was also the Thanksgiving Lunch at school so all classes were cut short in order to prepare the cafeteria.
