In Physical Education students must be tested twice in semester or year depending on grade level using the Fitness gram assessment. The goal in this lesson was to improve student performance for this assessment. The Fitness Gram assesses cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and strength using a variety of ability tests. During the lesson I had my cooperating teacher assist me in formatively assessing the students based on the above rubric. Before I began the activity I made a point to go over cardiovascular health and some basic reasons why it is so important. Studies show that childhood obesity is on the rise, currently up by 30% over the last 20 years. As you can see, I have taken the data from the rubric and based on which category students did the worst on, disaggregated the data. I compared males and females based on their cardiovascular performance. Displayed in the line graph above are the staggering results based on performance in class. Nearly half of the students in this class performed poorly in cardiovascular endurance. These students were unable to keep up with the class and frequently sat out. I was amazed at the students who could not continuously run for 60 seconds at a time.
