E-waste in Kolkata

In the city of Kolkata there is a problem of disposing Electronic-waste (E-waste). There is a lot of e-waste generated in the city and the sources of these wastes are hospitals, educational institutes and other places. Tonnes of e-waste are disposed off at disposing sites like Dhapa, Tiljala, Topsia, Tangra, Park Circus etc. which is getting mixed with other waste and which results in creation of serious health hazards. The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) is concerned about this increasing generation of E-waste and as a result it has come up with a very innovative idea of conducting workshops which is focused on spreading awareness on effective disposal of Ewaste. Around 70-80 representatives from various hospitals had attended this workshop. In future they are also planning to conduct more workshops wherein they will invite educational institutes as well. The best step which the authority has taken is that they have installed bins for ewaste at various places in the city. They are also planning to create e-waste collection center which will collect e-waste and facilitates the recycling of this waste. The authority has taken very beneficial steps to tackle the problem of e-waste in the city.
