Throughout my observations in grade 5 math, anecdotal records were recorded as followed:

In the following, whenever the teacher came to class, she never greats the students and never give feedback to them when they solve something on the board. But when I came to class, always I great the students and give them feedback appropriate to each situation. Wednesday 6, Nov. , 2013 from 12:55 till 1:45 :

At the outset of the session, the teacher welcomed the students and told them that she will start distributing the quizzes. The students had a quiz, so I was asked from the teacher to see who is copying from his friends. Through these two sessions I tried to observe the teacher and her students to be familiar with the physical classroom environment, the routines they follow in the class and what the teacher is expecting from her students. Monday 11, Nov. , 2013 from 11:10 till 12:05 : I asked the teacher to correct the homework they had on the board and all students participated and solved on the board. The teacher was correcting the quiz they did in 6/11/2013 , and I saw her using a pencil to erase an answer in the quiz for one of the students, and then correct it in a pencil, and after that, she ticked a in red. She tried to not let anyone see her. Wednesday 13, Nov. , 2013 from 1:00 till 1:45 : The teacher asked the students before this day to prepare the new lesson on a piece of paper. The teacher asked one of the students to explain the new lesson to her friends

and to act like the teacher. The student began the lesson, and the teacher asked questions so that students could answer them. The teacher and I acted like the students, and I answered one question when all the students had no answer to it. Saturday 16, Nov. , 2013 from 8:00 till 8:55 : The teacher told the students to study the rules they wrote on Thursday for 2 minutes. After that, she told them to write the rules on a piece of paper like an auto-dictation. The auto-dictation took them 15 minutes. After that, I corrected the homework they had on the board and some students participated and solved on the board. Monday 18, Nov. , 2013 from 11:10 till 12:05 : The students had a quiz in what was given before. They took all the session. Wednesday 20, Nov. , 2013 from 1:00 till 1:45 : I asked the teacher to correct the homework they had on the board and all students participated and solved on the board. The students were happy that all of them solved on the board. Saturday 23, Nov. , 2013 from 8:00 till 8:55 : On Thursday, the teacher asked the students to prepare the new lesson on a piece of paper. So on Saturday, I asked two students to stand and give the lesson to the students. Their explanation was very good. They missed some points so I re-assured them. I realized that students love to participate in these things. I tried my best to make them talk and explain only in English. The preparations of the two students are:

After their explanation finished, I asked the teacher to correct the homework they had on the board and all students participated and solved on the board. The students were happy that all of them solved on the board. Wednesday 27, Nov. , 2013 Saturday 30, Nov. , 2013 Monday 2,Dec. , 2013 4/12, 7/12, 9/12, 16/12, 17/12, 19/12, 21/12, & 21/12: I corrected the homework they had on the board and all students participated and solved on the board. The students were happy that all of them solved on the board.

After I realized that there is a routine, I decided that in every session I give or correct their homework, we begin with a riddle. Unfortunately, this school is not technologically equipped. So I decided to bring with me my laptop and speakers to the class and show them some riddles as follows. To let them all see the riddle, I go around the class with my laptop and make sure that they all see and understand what is given.
23/12/2013 (2 sessions): The first session was from 11:10 till 12:5, were the riddle was: How can you add eight 8's to get the number 1,000? (Only use addition). Students couldn't figure out the answer so I told them that they can answer me in the other day. Then, as usual we solved the homework on board. The riddle's solution is: 888 +88 +8 +8 +8 =1,000 The second session was from 12:10 till 1:45, were the English teacher was absent, so the math teacher told me to take this session and do whatever I want, and she left me with the students. I decided to tell the students that we will play a game, which is to

make every student tell me what he or she learned from the lesson they took with the teacher and give example on it. 24/12/2013 three sessions: In the first session, we played the multiplication game, were first I ask the students to give the answer for 9*9 for example, and by raising hands, I choose one of the students. If he/she answers right, he/she will ask another multiplication expression to his/her friends and choose one to answer. The game continues until each student in the class answers at least 2 questions right. The purpose from this game to make sure that students are memorizing the multiplication table, and to make sure that students think they are playing in an effective way. In the second and third sessions, the teacher had to leave, so I decided to give them first the riddle, which was: If you take 3 apples from a group of 5, how many do you have? Answer: Three - you just took them yourself! Then we proceed by correcting the homework. In the third session, I asked the supervisor to take the students down to the playground and we played basketball. 4/1 from 8 till 8:55 : I took permission from the day before from the teacher, supervisor, and the principal to make a little party to the students for the purpose of the Mawlid AL Sharif. I agreed with the students that whoever can bring something to class to eat and drink should take permission from his/her parents and tell me what he/she will bring. During the session, I put for them Madih and a small part from "Qissat AL Mawlid". At the end of the session, I distributed gifts to the students who were so happy and having fun.

6/1 from 11:10 till 12:5 : The teacher called me at 10 A.M. to tell me that she is not coming to school and that she was planning to give the students a new lesson. So I offered her to give the lesson. I prepared it in the university since I had a class. Then I went to school and gave the lesson by relating it to real life situations. The riddle was: Which weighs more, a kilo of
iron or a kilo of feathers? Answer: both weigh the same.

7/1, 8/1, and 9/1 : Riddle: How can half of 12 be 7? Answer: Cut XII into two halves horizontally. You get VII on the top half. Riddle: How many 9's are there between 1 and 100? Answer: 19 (9 19 29 39 49 59 69 79 89 90 91 92 93 94 95 96 97 98 99) Riddle: What is the next number in the sequence?

1 11 21 1211 111221 312211 Answer: The next number it: 13112221. Each number describes the previous number. Starting with 1, the second line describes it 11 (one 1). Then the third line describes 11 as 21 (two 1's). Then the fourth line describes 21 as 1211 (one 2, one 1). This is the pattern.

The teacher told me to let them solve all the exercises of the lesson and to prepare extra exercises for the students to be able to feel comfortable with the content. The extra work sheet was:

2
1a.

8 5

9
2a.

9 12

3
3a.

10 6

7
4a.

10 8

10
5a.

4 7

1
6a.

8 = 11

3
7a.

4 = 6

1
8a.

8 = 8
11/1 :

The principle decided to change the class in which students are in for the rest of the year. So I helped the students in changing their class: Old:

New:

13/1, 21/1, 22/1, 23/1, 25/1, 27/1, 28/1, & 29/1 : The teacher and I were making revision to the students because they had unit tests.
