Task 2: - Using the hazards identified in task 1 complete the table below. The first hazard has been given as an example. N0 1 2 3 4 Hazard Kettle with trailing cord Iron Iron with trailing cord Knife with handle off the edge of the table Open cupboards Consequence Initially, having a kettle with a trailing cord can result in a child could pulling on the cord and dragging the kettle of hot water down on themselves. Also, any person could trip on the cord and pour it on top of themselves. Having an iron in the kitchen is a hazard because if the iron is on or still hot, a person could easily get burned by simply mistaking it to be off or cool and touch it. Having an iron with a trailing cord is a hazard as a child could pull the cord and have the heavy, hard, and possibly hot iron fall on top of them. Also, anybody could trip on the cord and have the iron fall on top of them. A child can reach the handle of the knife and pull it down and might injure themselves or others. Furthermore, a person could bump the knife handle and the knife could fall on them and injure them. A person can run into, or bang their legs into the cupboard doors and injure themselves. Additionally, a child can take things out of the cupboard and eat them which can result in choking or allergic reaction. They could also drop the bottle/container and spill the contents making a hazard for them and others. Bugs and insects can contaminate food in the kitchen, and can also be very distracting when trying to concentrate on cooking. Furthermore, trying to swat them or lead them out of the kitchen can result in bumping into, spilling, knocking over, and breaking things which leads to injuries. Firstly, having the window open is a hazard as many bugs can fly in and contaminate the food. This can also lead to breaking objects in the kitchen as a person might try to swat the bug. Additionally, having something on the window sill is an even bigger risk as the window can blow open, knock off and break the object, and can even harm someone. Having a spill on the floor is very dangerous as anyone can slip on it and injure themselves badly. They can also break objects when trying to break their fall, or

even pull them on top of themselves to create further injures. Having pot handles off the stove is a very hazardous and dangerous thing to do in the kitchen. Firstly, a child is able to take the pot handle and pull it on them, unintentionally dragging the boiling water onto them which will cause serious and painful burns. Secondly, any person can walk past the stove and accidently bump the handle, and send the extremely hot contents onto themselves, consequently receiving serious burn injuries. Having a stove left unattended is very dangerous. Firstly, the contents can be over cooked, and sent flowing over the edges of the pot. Secondly, a child could come and touch the hot stove without knowing the consequences that the action will bring. Initially, having an oven left unattended is very dangerous because any child can go and open the oven, leaving endless possibilities of consequences. Also, the contents in the oven can catch on fire, and even break the oven. Having pets and animals in the kitchen is extremely dangerous and an enormous hazard. Pets are unpredictable and will do a lot to get to food. The pet can jump on counter tops, knock over pots and pans, spill contents of items, break things, and injure themselves or others. Having an open cereal box, or any open thing with contents in it, is a hazard in the kitchen. Containers with contents need to be closed as animals and pests can get into them and contaminate the food. This can lead to health issues and sickness. Open liquid containers and cartons are hazards in the kitchen as if they are knocked over, the liquid will spill. This can result in slipping and seriously injuring yourself or others if it is not cleaned up immediately. Having matches on the table for anyone to take is very dangerous. Any child can come and take a match and light it. This can result, in the most serious case, in a burning house. Fire is unpredictable and a source of it should not be left lying around for anyone to take. Its an accident waiting to happen.
