The first game between the Army and Navy was in $&'%, and since $'(% they have been played annually. #n total, there have been $$( games played, and Navy currently is the better team, with a record of )* wins, +' losses, and * draws. ,ere are a few of the many traditions in this gameRunning the football- .ach academy runs a football from their campus to the site of the game. /elay teams must run through night, in snow and ice, and be on time for the game the ne0t day. To be selected as a part of the relay team is a great honor. The March On- This is probably the most spectacular of the traditions. The students of each academy march onto the field and then ta!e their places in the tribunes. The sight of thousands of men and women, dressed in their respective uniforms, marching in perfect precision is an ama1ing thing to see. 2nce they ta!e their places, the students stand throughout the entire game. Honoring the allen- At the end of every game, the most unusual thing happens. 3oth teams meet at midfield, where they first turn to the tribune where the losing team4s students are. Then both teams sing the school song of the losing team. Afterwords both teams face the winning team4s students, and sing the school song of the winning team. This would be li!e 5parta and 5lavia doing this, and it will never happen. #n fact, this is the only game where such respect for an opponent is shown. #t is said this tradition is to honor the members of both services who were !illed fighting for their country. And what about this year6 Well the 3lac! 7nights of the Army will have a difficult time with the "idshipmen of the Navy.
