Variable Optical Delay Line: A variable optical delay line is a mechanism to cause a time delay between the transmitter

and receiver of an optical signal. VPDLs are designed as per the requirements of the application they are intended for and the length and range of signal delays. Proposed designs for VPDLs are free-space, wavelength-sensitive optical fiber and integrated-optic waveguide ring resonator-based optical delay lines. These VPDLs involve moving parts in which losses are generated due to movement and thus frictional and other physical losses. Our VPDL intends on using electronically-controlled tuned optical lenses Advantages of Free-space optical delay lines: - does not have temporal spreading effect Our VPDL Uses: phased-array antenna controls, RF transversal filtering, all-optical signal processing and communication systems, and laser-interferometry and low-coherence reflectometry (or optical coherence tomography) metrology and sensing systems
