During the Vedic age in India it is believed that women held a very important role, and were able to choose their husbands and be educated. Medieval period in history approached, Many customs that degraded women, such as Sati and child marriage, Sati, Purdah, Devdasis. The status of women was not on equal terms with men in the past century in India.

According to a 1991 World Bank report, women accounted for 94% of total employment in dairy production in India. Women constitute 51% of the total employed in forestbased small-scale enterprises
