Universal Soccer Terms


Communication on the soccer field is essential towards success. You will be expected to know the following terms before tryouts. If you have any questions, see Coach Morrissey.

1.) Square! Say this when you are to the right or left of a teammate and open to receive a pass. 2.) Drop! Say this when you are behind a teammate and open to receive a pass. 3.) Through! Say this when you are between two opponents and open to receive a pass. 3.) Man on! Say this to your teammate when an opponent is approaching them from behind in an attempt to take the ball. 4.) Time! Say this to your teammate to let her know that she has space and time to dribble the ball and make a smart decision of what to do next. No opponents pose an immediate threat. 5.) Line! Say this when you want your teammate to kick or throw the ball down the nearest sideline. 6.) Mark up! Say this to your teammates when you want them to pick an opponent to cover defensively. 7.) Leave! Say this when you want your teammate to move away from the ball, allowing you to take possession of the ball 8.) Switch! or Switch fields! Say this when you want your team to get the ball to the other side of the field because the current side is too crowded.
