The rules
A cantus is an old Belgian traditional night where students come together to sing and drink. This does not happen in a random way, everything is organized by a set of rules. Where it all starts The evening starts when the "senior" enters the room. He will be the chairman or the big boss for tonight. The "senior" opens the evening with the words. " A!T"# $!% which is &atin for' the cantus has started.

Traditionally, the first song has to be the ($o )ivat% and we sing this standing up with our right hand on our heart. Verbum Because a cantus is about tradition and respect, you should always address the senior in a formal way. $f you want to say something in public you must stand up and ask the senior' "SENIOR, PETO VERBUM". The senior agrees' "HABES" or refuses' "NON HABES ". $f the senior says' "SILENTIUM" everybody must stop talking and obey the silence. The senior decides when you can sit by saying' (OMNES AD SEDES". *ou reply with (#+,$-"#%. .hen you have to get up the senior says (SUR ITE% and you say (#"/0$-"#%. Tem!us $f you want to leave the table 1e.g. to go to the toilet2, you must ask for it (SENIOR, PETO TEMPUS%. The senior agrees' (HABES% or refuses' (NON HABES%. *ou might have to perform a little punishment or make a 3pissing rhyme4 in order to go to the toilet. Si"#i"# The senior will sometimes point somebody who has to sing the first lines of a song5alone6 After the 7 first lines, the senior will say (A, 8-!+#% and then everybody sings along. $f you don9t know the song, please be silent and listen and then start singing :uietly. .e don9t always sing the whole song. The senior indicates which strophe will be sung' ;st' A, </$-A7nd' A, #+ "!,A=rd' A, T+/T$Alast' A, "&T$-A4

Dri"$i"# $f you don9t drink beer, you must mention this at the beginning of the evening. #ometimes 1actually a lot of times2 the senior will instruct you to drink. He will do so in &atin. He will say or sing the words' (PROSIT %ORONA%. *ou must then answer with' (PROSIT SENIOR%. The senior can say this as many times as he>she wants and you have to repeat it the same way. $n the end the senior will give a drinking command' A, ?"!,"- ' The whole glass in one time A, &$B$,"- ' as much as you want &OU NEVER DRIN' WITHOUT (IRST SA&IN SENIOR, PROSIT %ORONA* )PROSIT

?or e@ample the senior will say' (</8#$T 8/8!A, A, ?"!,"-% and you will reply with' (</8#$T #+!$8/, </8#$T 8/8!A A, ?"!,"-%. After that you drink your whole glass. $f you want to challenge somebody to drink you stand up and say' "</8#$T, A". $f A accepts the challenge A then stands and responds' "</8#$T, *" and you both drink an ad fundum. ,o not do this in the beginning of a cantus as you must survive the evening. $t is not allowed to challenge the senior or to disturb the cantus. !obody can force you to drink. *ou can stop drinking beer and ask for water AT A!* T$-+. ,rinking is fun, but if you drink too much it is less fun for you and the others6 *ou can always switch to water. Pu"ishme"ts $f the senior decides that you didn9t obey him or broke one of the rules of the cantus, you will be asked to come to the middle. This is called "A, <$#T"-" or in ,utch ($! ,+ BA!%. There you will have to perform a small and funny punishment, unless you were really bad6
