KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY EDUCATION DEPARTMENT LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teacher Candidate:

Samantha Reed

Date: Tuesday 2/25/14 Coop. Initials Grade Level 4th Section

Cooperating Teacher: Jessica Mack Group Size: 25 Allotted Time 11:50-12:40 Math-Lines of Symmetry

Subject or Topic:

STANDARD: CC.2.3.4.A.3 Recognize symmetric shapes and draw lines of symmetry. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): The fourth grade students will identify lines of symmetry by recognizing congruent halves. II. Instructional Materials -Symmetrical shapes -Asymmetrical shapes -Exit Slips III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea). A. Prerequisite skills 1. Basic knowledge of polygons and congruent figures. B. Key Vocabulary 1. Line of symmetry: line on which a figure can be folded so that both halves are congruent. C. Big Idea: Lines of symmetry divide a shape in half equally. IV. Implementation A. Introduction 1. Hand each student a different polygon and ask them to recognize the shape and to remember what we talked about yesterday with congruent figures. B. Development 1. Now show your own equilateral triangle folded in an equal half. Ask the students and prompt them to think of congruent shapes. If they need to see it, cut the shape along the line. 2. Now have students work on folding their own shape, and if they see more than one spot to fold it, do that also.

3. Now have the same shapes get in the same groups and see how many folds each person has and if they need additional folds, or have some that do not work. 4. Now explain that these lines are called lines of symmetry. That if a line cuts a shape in half exactly then it is symmetrical. 5. Share each shape to the class and showing the number of lines of symmetry on each shape. 6. Now give each group an asymmetrical shape. Have them work together to try to find the line of symmetry in this shape. Students will find that they cannot. Explain that some shapes do not have a line of symmetry. 7. Now, have students go back to their seats. Have all the students explore the room or their desk and find something with a line of symmetry. Share these objects and the lines where these items can be split. 8. Now give each student an exit slip to finish for homework. C. Closure 1. Write down to finish the exit slip for homework. D. Accommodations/Differentiation 1. Walk around with some students to find something that is symmetrical if they are struggling with the concept. E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan 1. Formative- students will be marked off for correctly giving a symmetrical example, and the exit slip will be looked at. 2. Summative- There is no summative for this lesson. V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives (after lesson is taught)

Remediation Plan

B. Personal Reflection 1. Was I able to use a new technique to get the attention of the students between each transition?

How could this lesson be improved?
