Trees and Forests (Part A) Due date : March 24 th, 2014

C Layer:
*Required by all - Activity 1 1. Find a notebook, binder, duotang, etc., and designate is as your Trees and Forest Unit Work. You will be asked to keep all layers in it, so choose wisely. 5 points 2. Create a unit cover page using real materials from trees and the forest, or any other creative way . 5 points Choose 1 from activities 2-6 Use any reliable source to define each vocabulary term. Put the definitions in your own words. Be prepared to define randomly selected words from the list to earn half of the points for the assignment.

2. Create flash cards (use checklist for details) for each vocabulary term. (Solo) 10 points 3. Make a Bulletin Board that defines and give examples of each vocabulary term. (Pairs) 10 points 4. Create a game that explains all of the vocabulary terms and we can play as a class. (Solo) 10 points 5. Create a Crossword puzzle using all of the vocabulary terms. You must include an answer sheet/key for this. (Solo) 10 points 6. Complete a Frayer Model definition for each vocabulary term. (Solo) 10 points Choose 2 from activities 7-12 7. Make a chart or table to compare/contrast characteristics of trees and characteristics of other plants. 5 points 8. Make a chart or table that shows the characteristics of deciduous and coniferous trees found in the local environment. 5 points

9. Compare and contrast deciduous trees and coniferous trees. 5 points 10. Listen to the lecture What makes a tree a tree? Take notes. 5 points 11. Listen to the lecture Tree Cookies. Complete accompanying worksheet. 5 points 12. Create a brochure or a pamphlet explaining The Importance of Trees and Forests ( making sure to
include the Personal, Community, Global importance). 5 points

B Layer:
Choose activities for 20 points. 15. Find a tree that has been cut down and determine its age. Include a picture of the tree 5 points 16. Complete the Life of a Tree assignment. 5 points 17. Teach someone in your family how read a tree ring. Have them sign below to indicate completion of this. 5 points

19. Draw a diagram of a tree with all its parts. 5 points 20. Describe the characteristics of 4 trees (2 deciduous and 2 coniferous) from our local environment. Choose either a research paper (one full page, single spaced, no larger than size 14 Arial font) or PowerPoint (min.10 slides) to do this activity. 10 points 21. Identify characteristics of at least four trees found in the local environment. Create a collage, webpage, blog post, mini video etc. 10 points 22. Complete the Trees and Forests Test (must score above 80% for full marks). 20 points

A. Layer:
Choose 3. 23. Which trees are better deciduous or coniferous? Persuade me to like one of those and why! 10 points 24. What makes a tree a tree? 10 points 25. Imagine what life would be like if there were no trees. Describe possible consequences or effects of such a situation. 10 points 26. Identify human uses of forests, and compare modern and historical patterns of use. How has forestry evolved? Create a time table (in a creative way) to represent the change over time. 10 points 27. Identify an issue regarding forest use, identify different perspectives on that issue, and identify actions that might be taken. Create a petition and find signatures of people to support t your initiative. 10 Points

Trees and Forests Part A


By the end of this unit, you will. . . describe characteristics of trees and the interaction of trees with other living things in the local environment. recognize trees as individual plants and as part of a forest ecosystem. learn the characteristics of different trees and develop skills in describing and interpreting the structural features of trees. study the complex interaction between trees and the larger environment. become aware of a broad range of environmental issues and develop an awareness of the need for responsible use.
General Instructions: Complete one layer before going on to another layer. Each assignment has a point value based on the amount of time and effort necessary to complete that task. You must earn the required number of points in any one layer before moving to the next layer. Be prepared to discuss and answer questions about each of your assignments. Failure to do this will result in no credit for that assignment. You will be awarded points based upon your ability to discuss and answer questions about your work.

Reminders:
Unless indicated otherwise, all activities are individual and should be original work. Borrowing/copying ideas is not appropriate. Use a highlighter to indicate which items you have chosen to do on each given day. Be sure to choose a variety of activities which cover all of the unit objectives. Be mindful of time. If you do not complete an activity during class time, you will likely need to take it home to finish it. In order make the unit deadline, you should aim to complete approximately 20 points of work per day. * If you choose to complete a computer aided activity, you must be aware that you may require time outside of class to complete this. Wasting class time while waiting for a computer is NOT allowed. You must obtain my signature next to each assessed activity to show that you received the points. No signature, no points.

At the end of the unit, you must hand in the unit sheet, along with all B and A layer work. Lost unit sheets = lost marks.
C Layer: Be prepared to orally defend all work. If you are not ready when your interview time comes up, you are responsible to arrange an alternate time. A maximum of 40 points can be earned from the activities listed in the C Layer. B and A Layer items should look like finished pieces. These must be handed in when the unit is due.
