TEACHING PRACTICE LESSON PLAN (2013-2014) 1ST YEAR TECHNICAL GRAPHICS, LESSON 15, WEEK 5

Subject: Technical Graphics Pupil Year Group: 1 Lesson No. 15 Date: 7 February 2014
th st

Topic: Polygons No. of Pupils: 12 Length Of Lesson: 80 mins Time of Lesson: 12.00

1. STATEMENT OF THE PUPILS PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The students are now very familiar with the core elements of the topic of Polygons. They have learnt how to draw the polygons outlined on the syllabus and which the cooperating teacher wanted me to focus on. They are able to draw hexagons, pentagons and octagons using different methods such as using their equipment or by constructing them inside of a circle. In the case of octagons students can also construct one inside a square. The students are very familiar with the parts of polygons and how to calculate the exterior and interior angles. The students have also adapted these polygons into the use of logo construction and from this they also have a good appreciation of how the topic of polygons is so relevant to life outside of school. The final aspect explored of the topic on Monday and Wednesday of this week was constructing polygons from a given line which students found very manageable.

2. RATIONALE FOR THE SELECTION & STRUCTURING OF SUBJECT MATTER AND FOR THE METHODOLOGY
As we are essentially finished the topic of polygons and due to the level of enjoyment expressed by students as they constructed various logos, I felt a final revision class from which they constructed their own unique logo would provide students with a memorable final experience on the topic. I also get the feeling from the students that they are eager to move on to something different. Todays class will involve the students designing an award in the shape of a polygon (octagon) to do with the world cup. So that the class is slightly varied I will be introducing the topic in a more unusual way by using a satirical homemade news video. The students will use their knowledge to construct the octagon firstly and then use their imagination and creativity to design a reward. In terms of new learning the students will get to explore even more uses of polygons outside of the classroom and they will also get to explore the designs that can be formed around the basis of polygons. The students can be disruptive if not engaged in the work and sometimes lack motivation so I hope that by providing an unusual backdrop to the lesson and allowing them to use their creativity they will have a very enjoyable experience, and hopefully learn plenty along the way.

3. AIMS
Provide a safe, welcoming, enthusiastic and positive learning environment where students feel comfortable and can express themselves. Further explore the many uses of polygons in an innovative fashion Utilize the students creativity and imaginations towards designing a world cup trophy. Finish the topic of Polygons through an exciting and engaging activity Exercise the students knowledge of the topic towards completing their designs.

4. LEARNING OUTCOMES & CORRESPONDING ASSESSMENTS

Learning Outcomes (LOs) At the end of this lesson the students will be enabled to Compare their abilities at the beginning of the topic to the stage they are at now Further relate the topic of polygons to the world outside if the classroom Confidently adapt polygon shapes into designs ideas that they might use in other subjects

Assessment of Los

Students will examine a timeline on which is outlined the drawings they have constructed from the beginning to now

Through the design of a trophy and the exploration of interesting elements

incorporated in the lesson students will be able to better relate the uses of polygons to the world around them Students will complete a design of their own using a polygon shape

5. THE LESSON SEQUENCE

TIME LINE TEACHER ACTIVITIES Set Induction, welcome the students and make them feel welcome. Identify through casual chatting with them how their week has gone and how they are feeling. This will help me assess the students moods and mind-sets. I will help the students to set up their equipment. I will firstly introduce the aims of todays class after which I will introduce a timeline on a PowerPoint presentation emphasising to the students how hard they have worked and how well they have progressed since we began the topic. I will ask students questions on this as I go through it. I will then pretend to show the students an article I found on the RTE website and while doing so play a fake video I made which states that the world cup trophy has been robbed and that the design of a new one is needed. After this I will demonstrate the model made and how the best design of the class will be placed on the model and displayed in the cabinet at the library. I will issue the drawing sheets to the students and explore with them the shape which must be constructed. I will ask questions on how the shape will be constructed and we will work out the various angles needed. PUPIL ACTIVITIES The students will enter the room and tell me how their day and week has gone. They will set up their drawing equipment and tape will be passed around.

The aim of the class will be presented to the students and they will then observe a timeline from which they will have to think about how much they have progressed from when we originally began the topic.

The students will also answer my questions They will then observe as I introduce the activity of the day.

They will observe the model and ask questions If they like.

20 30

The drawing sheets will be passed around and they students can line them up on their boards. The students will explore how we will construct the shape to begin with identifying the exterior angle and the name of the polygon.

30 50

I will allow the students to begin drawing. If they have any problems they will be asked to raise their hands for my attention. I will monitor the students individually and ensure they are using the correct procedure. When the Octagon is constructed I will give the students complete freedom to design the trophy as they wish. I will inform that that bonus points will go towards adding in other polygons.

Students will then begin drawing If they have any questions they are welcome to ask them Students will have to use the correct methods to draw the octagon so that when they cut it out it will definitely fit on the trophy.

50 60

They will have complete freedom over their design once the octagon is constructed. Students will receive extra points if additional polygons are introduced into their design. I will also have different drawings The students can explore my additional and shapes and designs which the designs and take ideas from them students may get inspiration from. Students will be given as much time They can use as much time as needed. as they need to explore their imaginations. They will be asked to colour it as Students will have to add colour. best as possible. I will be focussing on the effort put into the designs rather than the end result. When students are happy with their designs they will cut out the shape. And present it to me. If it feels appropriate we will show off the designs to the rest of the class. If students finish very quickly I will have a variety of different puzzles and also a word search and crossword puzzle based on polygons for them to explore. Students can then cut out their design once it is finished. If they are happy to they can show it off to the rest of the class and explain their design. Students who finish will be given additional work all based upon polygons.

Three designs will be narrowed down to our finalists and from this one will be chose to go onto the trophy. The winner will receive a round of applause and will be awarded a certificate and the design will be stuck onto the trophy. The runners up will receive a bar. If time still remains I will issue the students with sheets on which if they cut out the design and glue it together they will have their very own ball based on a polygon design. I will have a completed one to show them. Three designs will be chosen as the top three. One design will then be chosen with the classes help as the overall winner The winner will receive a round of applause and a certificate. They will stick their design onto the trophy. The runners up will receive a bar. Students will be given sheets with a design on them from which if they cut out the design at home and stick it together they will forma shape based upon polygons.

6. PLANNING FOR DIFFERENTIATION I would hope that the structure of this class will help me in my approach to dealing with differentiation. Firstly for the more unmotivated students i hope that the wacky introduction will persuade them to get involved with the classes activities. Secondly I hope that because the design is being left to the students discretion they will be more engaged in completing the drawing. I also hope that as students will be working at their own pace for the majority of the lesson it will give me time to individually monitor and intervene and address the different strength and weaknesses. I will also have plenty of additional material for the students who need it. One student suffers from oppositional defiant disorder and I have found if he is not in the humour for doing the work presented it is best to offer him something alternative. The other students in the class are appreciative of this also. As well as that I will follow the other guidelines outlined from the IEPs which suggest using praise, keeping the students on task and encouraging the effort placed into the work rather than the end result.

7. PLANNING FOR LITERACY AND NUMERACY Literacy will be addressed through the use of key words written on the board and on the sheets provided for the students. The timeline will also encourage the use of the correct terminology with regards to the topic. Numeracy will be addressed in the construction on the octagon. Students will help me work out the exterior angle and have to make sure the sides re all the same. They will also have to ensure their angles are correct. If needed the additional material such as the word searches and crosswords also place a heavy emphasis on the key words of the topic and at no time are any easy answers given.

8. PERSONAL REFLECTION AND POST LESSON APPRAISAL The students are great in this class and its hard not to be fond of them even when they drive you mad. The video went down a treat and my aspirational acting skills almost fooled the students thinking it was someone else. The students got down to work and one mistake I made was forgetting to place an emphasis on the students taking their time and placing as much effort as possible to complete the design as some really rushed it. Johns design was chosen overall which is brilliant as he had not won the drawing of the week yet.
